Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

The kitchen air felt as though it had been entirely sucked out of the room, leaving Norah gasping for oxygen.

She looked from the ultrasound print in Dominic’s hand up to his merciless slate-gray eyes. There was no escaping this truth anymore. The web of lies had finally snapped under its own weight.

"It's mine," Norah whispered, her voice shaking uncontrollably as hot tears finally spilled over her lower lashes.

Dominic didn't yell. He didn't smash the glass or shatter the marble counter. His absolute silence was infinitely more terrifying than any explosive outburst. He stood frozen, staring at the tiny, grainy silhouette of his unborn child as if looking at a ghost from another dimension.

"Five months," Dominic calculated out loud, his voice chillingly analytical. "That night in the safe room during the compound breach."

Norah swallowed hard, wrapping her arms protectively around her stomach. "I didn't plan this, Dominic. I never wanted to trap you, and I certainly didn't want to raise a child inside a fortress built on blood and paranoia. That's why I was leaving. I was going to disappear so you would never even know."

"Disappear," Dominic repeated the word as if it were a foreign concept. A muscle twitched violently along his clenched jaw. "You thought you could quietly carry my child out of this estate and vanish into thin air? Do you have any idea how many enemies I have, Norah? If a rival syndicate discovered that Dominic Russo had an heir out in the world, they wouldn't just kill you—they would carve the child out of your womb to send a message."

"That is why I had to go!" Norah’s voice broke, righteous anger momentarily piercing her terror. "Out there, in the normal world, we could hide! In here, this baby is nothing more than a tactical target, a pawn in your criminal war games!"

Dominic stepped closer, towering over her with an intimidating intensity that made her instinctively back up until her spine hit the cold glass of the kitchen window.

"You think running makes you safe?" he growled softly, bringing his hand up to cup her cheek. His thumb brushed away a tear, his touch surprisingly gentle despite the lethal tension humming in his veins. "Nobody leaves my sphere of influence alive, Norah. Especially not carrying the next head of the Russo family."

Norah’s breath hitched. "The next head...? You want this baby raised in this life?"

"I want my child protected," Dominic corrected fiercely, his eyes locking onto hers with absolute, unyielding possession. "And I want the mother of my child safe inside my walls where I can personally guarantee her survival. You should have told me the day you found out."

"And risk you locking me in a gilded cage? Risk you taking the baby the moment it was born?" Norah sobbed, pushing against his chest with her small hands. "I've seen how you operate, Dominic. Everything is an asset or a liability to you!"

Dominic caught her wrists effortlessly, pulling her hands away from his chest and pinning them gently against his sides. He leaned down until his forehead rested lightly against hers, his warm breath mingling with hers in the cool morning air.

"If I viewed you as a liability, Norah, you would have been standing outside the gates months ago," he murmured against her lips. "You are the only person in this entire city who has ever looked at me and seen a human being instead of a monster. Do you honestly believe I would hurt you? Or our child?"

Norah stared into his stormy eyes, searching for a shred of deceit, finding only a raw, terrifying intensity that mirrored her own frantic heartbeat.

Before she could form a reply, the heavy security alarm system across the entire estate suddenly shrieked to life, flashing blinding red strobe lights through the bulletproof kitchen windows.

Dominic’s demeanor shifted instantly from intimate lover to ruthless cartel boss in a fraction of a second. The softness vanished, replaced by pure, lethal predator instinct.

"Stay right here," he commanded, dropping her wrists and turning toward the hallway where his tactical secure comms unit was mounted.

He snatched the receiver off the wall, his voice booming with absolute authority as he barked rapid orders to his perimeter guards. "Report! Status at the north gate!"

Static hissed through the speaker before a frantic voice broke through. "Boss! We’ve got an incoming convoy! Three unmarked black SUVs just blew through the outer perimeter checkpoint! They’re heavily armed—looks like the Moretti faction making a play!"

Dominic’s eyes flashed with pure, unadulterated fury. The Moretti family had been testing his boundaries for months, but attacking his home while he was inside was a declaration of total war.

"Lock down the estate. Activate the reinforced shutters on the ground floor. Let them through the courtyard, but cut off their retreat at the gates. I want every single one of them neutralized," Dominic ordered coldly, hanging up the receiver.

He turned back to Norah, who stood frozen in horror as the distant pop of automatic gunfire began to echo across the manicured lawns outside.

"Get to the panic room downstairs, Norah. Now," Dominic commanded, drawing a heavy Beretta pistol from his waistband and checking the magazine with expert precision.

"And you?" she asked, her voice trembling.

May you like

Dominic looked at her one last time, his slate-gray eyes softening for a fleeting second before hardening back into steel. He reached out, gently pressing the ultrasound print back into her palm and closing her fingers around it.

"I have to clean house," Dominic said grimly. "Stay in the safe room. I will come back for you."
