Chapter 1 - The Trap Closes

The strip of light beneath the bathroom door fractured as a heavy shadow fell across it. I watched, frozen in place, as Patricia’s wrinkled fingers slid a small, cold brass key across the hardwood floor until it stopped right against the baseboard.

"Open it yourself, Brandon," Patricia’s voice hissed from the hallway, dripping with venom. "Show her she doesn't run this household. A weak mother raises a weak child, and we are not going to let her ruin our grandson’s future."

My heart hammered frantically against my ribs, a wild bird trapped in a cage of bone and muscle. In my arms, my newborn son, Liam, gave a soft, restless stir, his tiny breath warm against my bruised collarbone. Every inch of my body throbbed from the violence that had just taken place. My left cheek felt swollen and hot where Brandon’s heavy hand had struck me, my lip was split and tasting faintly of copper, and a dull, throbbing ache radiated across my shoulder and thigh where I had been slammed against the hardwood floor.

Only minutes earlier, I had been sitting on the toilet, my pants still half down, when Brandon had burst through the door like a wild animal. He had grabbed a handful of my hair, yanked me violently off the seat, and twisted me down onto the floor with terrifying ease. While I gasped for air, his mother, Patricia, had swooped in, snatched my crying newborn from my arms, and tossed him carelessly onto the mattress like a sack of laundry—all to "teach me a lesson" about defiance.

I had fought back with every ounce of adrenaline left in my broken body, clawing my way free, scooping up Liam, and locking myself inside the downstairs bathroom before they could trap us completely.

Now, the brass key sat just inches away from the door gap, a chilling symbol of impending doom. On the sink counter, my phone remained connected to the emergency dispatcher. The quiet, steady voice of the officer echoed faintly through the speakerphone: "Samantha, are you still there? Backup is five minutes away. Do not open that door under any circumstances."

"I'm here," I whispered back into the phone, keeping my voice low and controlled.

Outside the door, the heavy metallic click of the key being inserted into the deadbolt sent a shriek of cold terror down my spine. Brandon’s breathing was heavy, ragged, and impatient. The mask of calm concern he had worn moments before had completely melted away, replaced by the ugly, entitled rage of a man who believed his wife was nothing more than property.

"You think you’re smart, locking yourself in here?" Brandon’s voice snarled through the wood, muffled but unmistakably venomous. "You think you can defy me in my own house? Open this door right now, Samantha, or I swear I'll take the whole frame down with my bare hands."

The lock turned with a definitive, metallic thud. The trap was closing. But they had no idea that my phone was still broadcasting every single threat straight to the police department, and time was running out for them.
