Chapter 3 - THE UNCLE WHO CAME TO THE FUNERAL
Marcus Lane had stood beside Hannah during Daniel’s funeral.
He carried the casket, greeted mourners and gave a speech about family loyalty. Afterward, he placed one hand on Hannah’s shoulder and told her Daniel’s death should teach them all to stop living for work.
Hannah remembered feeling grateful that he had come.
Now the memory made her sick.
Robert called the police before Elaine could stop him.
She grabbed his arm.
“You cannot involve them.”
“Our son said Marcus poisoned him.”
“He was confused.”
“He named your brother.”
“If Marcus is arrested, everything will come out.”
“That is exactly what needs to happen.”
Elaine’s expression hardened.
“You will lose the company.”
“I already lost my son.”
Robert contacted a retired detective he trusted. Within an hour, the medical file, forged order and toxicology report were secured as evidence.
Police reopened Daniel’s death investigation that evening.
Marcus did not wait to be questioned.
He emptied one bank account, abandoned his car at the airport and disappeared.
That action removed any remaining doubt.
Investigators searched his home and discovered prescription heart medication inside a hidden wall safe. The batch number traced back to an Ashford Medical Supply warehouse.
They also found messages between Marcus and Elaine.
Most concerned the missing money.
One message had been sent the morning Daniel died.
He has copies. If he reaches the agents, we are finished.
Elaine replied:
Talk to him. Do not do anything reckless.
Marcus answered:
I know how to make him delay the meeting.
Elaine insisted she believed Marcus intended only to frighten Daniel or steal the evidence.
Investigators were not convinced.
Hannah’s anger expanded beyond what had happened in the hospital. Elaine knew Marcus planned to interfere. She knew Daniel had been poisoned. Then she forged the DNR that prevented doctors from saving him.
Whether she planned his death or merely helped complete it no longer mattered to Hannah.
But the financial records Daniel intended to expose remained missing.
The locked case was not found in his car, office or hospital room.
Marcus had searched Daniel’s belongings immediately after his death. Elaine had searched Hannah’s house several times under the excuse of helping organize legal paperwork.
Neither found it.
Robert remembered Daniel’s final visit to the family home.
“He spent almost an hour upstairs with Noah.”
Noah had been five then.
Hannah knelt in front of him.
“Do you remember Dad giving you anything before he died?”
Noah frowned.
“He gave me a spaceship.”
Hannah knew the toy. A large wooden rocket sat on a shelf in Noah’s bedroom. Daniel built it himself and painted Noah’s initials beneath one wing.
“What did he say?”
“He said I had to keep it safe until you were ready.”
Hannah’s heart began pounding.
They returned home with two detectives.
Inside the rocket’s hollow base, they found a small storage key and a note written by Daniel.
Hannah, if you are reading this, my mother knows I found the transfers. Marcus is involved. Do not trust any medical or legal document they ask you to sign. The originals are in locker 314 at Union Station.
The locker contained Daniel’s complete evidence file.
Bank statements traced the stolen millions to Marcus and Elaine. Recorded conversations proved Elaine ordered Robert to sign documents without explaining them. Emails showed Marcus had bribed an auditor and threatened Daniel.
There was also a voice recording made inside the company garage.
Marcus’s voice could be heard saying, “Drink the coffee, calm down and give us until Monday.”
Daniel replied, “What did you put in this?”
The recording ended with a crash.
Federal agents issued warrants for Marcus and Elaine.
Before police reached the Ashford house, Elaine vanished.
Security footage showed her leaving through the rear gate with a suitcase.
She had taken Robert’s passport, cash from the family safe and the original company ownership certificates.
Robert blamed himself.
“I let her control everything because reading the details felt inconvenient.”
Hannah looked at the man who had signed documents without understanding them and believed comforting explanations because the truth demanded action.
“Elaine forged my name,” she said. “But she used yours because she knew you would not ask questions.”
Robert lowered his head.
“She was right.”
Noah stood beside the wooden rocket, holding the note from his father.
“Are Grandma and Uncle Marcus going to come back?”
Hannah pulled him close.
“I don’t know.”
The answer arrived the following morning.
Marcus called Robert from an unknown number.
He said Elaine had betrayed him, taken the remaining money and left him to face the investigation alone.
Then he offered a deal.

But only if Hannah agreed to destroy the forged DNR.
