Chapter 4 - The Fifty-Million-Dollar Trap

Arthur Pendelton, the senior board investor, stood up slowly, clutching the edge of the table as if trying to steady himself in an earthquake.
“Emily... is that really you?” Arthur stammered, looking back and forth between her living, breathing form and Brandon, who was currently hyperventilating against his chair. “The Coast Guard report... the police... Brandon said you fell!”
“Brandon is many things, Arthur,” Emily said smoothly, turning her gaze slowly toward her husband, who looked like he had just seen the devil himself. “A visionary software developer. A charismatic CEO. A ruthless adulterer. And, as it turns out, a very clumsy murderer.”
Brandon finally found his voice, though it came out as a desperate, frantic screech. ရှင် “She’s lying! This is a fraud! Some kind of deranged stunt—security, throw her out! She’s not Emily!”
“Quiet, Brandon,” Marcus Vance stepped forward, snapping open his leather briefcase and tossing a thick stack of certified documents across the polished mahogany table directly in front of Arthur Pendelton. “Those are certified federal medical records, dental charts, DNA verification results from an independent Oregon clinic, and a stamped birth certificate for Liam Vale—born to Emily and Brandon Vale three weeks ago.”
The board members gasped, leaning over to inspect the papers.
Emily continued, her voice dropping into an icy, venomous register. “Three weeks ago, Brandon lured me to an isolated trail in Glacier National Park under the guise of a babymoon. In reality, he and his executive assistant, Gretchen Bennett, had spent months quietly updating my life insurance policy to a fifty-million-dollar payout, with Brandon as the sole primary beneficiary and corporate assets serving as collateral.”
Gretchen buried her face in her hands, her professional armor completely shattering. “Brandon... she knows. She knows everything.”
“You pushed me off a fifty-foot ice cliff, Brandon,” Emily said, taking two slow steps closer to him.
The color was entirely gone from Brandon’s face now. Sweat beaded thickly on his forehead as he realized the trap had snapped shut with absolute, inescapable precision.
“You stood at the edge,” Emily whispered, her eyes boring straight into his soul. “You smiled. And you told me my baby and I wouldn't suffer long. But you made one critical mistake, darling.”
Brandon swallowed hard, his throat dry as bone. “What... what mistake?”
“You underestimated the will of a mother fighting for her child,” Emily said sharply. “While you were down at the command post filing insurance claims and rehearsing your grieving-widower speech for the federal underwriters, I was being pulled out of that canyon alive. And I spent the last three weeks watching you hang yourself with your own rope.”
Marcus Vance stepped forward, laying a second, thicker file onto the table. “Furthermore, Mr. Vale, those documents also contain forensic audits of Apex Logic’s operating accounts. We have uncovered illegal offshore wire transfers totaling twelve million dollars funneled into shell companies registered under Gretchen Bennett’s maiden name—embezzlement executed while forging Mrs. Vale’s corporate signature on fraudulent restructuring notes.”
Arthur Pendelton stared at the files in utter horror, then looked up at Brandon with cold, unmitigated disgust. “My God. You tried to murder your wife for insurance money, and you were looting the company’s treasury to fund your affair.”
“Arthur—wait, let me explain!” Brandon lunged forward, his hands trembling as he reached out toward the board members. “She’s manipulating you! This is a hostile takeover!”
“It’s not a hostile takeover, Brandon,” Emily smiled coldly, turning her back on him and walking over to the stroller, where baby Liam was beginning to stir and stretch his tiny arms. “It’s an eviction.”
The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open once more. This time, two federal agents from the U.S. Attorney’s Office and three uniformed Seattle police officers walked steadily into the room, their badges gleaming under the bright fluorescent lights.
“Brandon Vale and Gretchen Bennett,” the lead federal agent stated clearly, stepping up behind Brandon and pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt. “You are under arrest for attempted premeditated murder, wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

As the cold metal cuffs clicked sharply around Brandon’s wrists, he let out a strangled, broken sound of absolute defeat, his knees buckling as the police dragged him past the woman he had tried to throw off a cliff.
Emily didn't even flinch. She simply adjusted her baby son’s blanket, looking forward with unbreakable, triumphant grace.
