Chapter 3 - The Desperate Defense

The blaring security alarm echoed through the house like a war horn, shaking the walls and disorienting the intruder just long enough for me to scramble backward. The man in the gray uniform cursed loudly, wiping the dark blood from his upper lip with the back of his sleeve while casting panicked glances toward the hallway stairs.

“Damn it!” he hissed, realizing his window of controlled execution had slammed shut.

Footsteps pounded on the front porch downstairs, followed by the heavy, authoritative rattling of the front door handle. Someone was trying to break in—not to finish me off, but to help.

“Police! Open up!” a booming voice roared from the entryway, followed by the splintering sound of wood as a boot kicked the front door wide open.

Panic surged through the intruder. He realized he was trapped between a dying woman and incoming law enforcement. He grabbed his toolkit, scrambled to his feet, and bolted toward the open guest bedroom window that led out onto the second-story roof, leaping blindly into the shrubbery below just as heavy boots thundered up the staircase.

“Clear!” a voice shouted from the hallway.

A moment later, two local police officers burst into the nursery with guns drawn. Their expressions hardened instantly as they took in the horrific scene: the vast puddle of dark blood, my pale, shivering body slumped against the crib, and my newborn son crying hysterically in the background.

“Get an ambulance here now!” the lead officer yelled into his shoulder radio, dropping to his knees beside me. “We have a Code Red hemorrhage and trauma at 441 Meadow Lane! Move, move, move!”

Cold, trembling hands pressed gauze against my abdomen, applying firm, life-saving pressure that sent excruciating waves of pain shooting through my body. But I didn't care about the pain. I grabbed the officer’s sleeve with my blood-stained fingers, pulling him down close to my face.

“Ethan...” I choked out, tears mixing with the sweat on my forehead. “My husband... Ethan... he planned this. He went to the Smoky Mountains... he paid the man... arrest him...”

The officer’s eyes widened with shock, but he nodded firmly, signaling another paramedic who had just rushed into the room with an oxygen mask. “We know, ma’am. Just stay with us. Help is here. We’ve already flagged his vehicle on Interstate 40.”

As the oxygen mask was strapped over my face, filling my lungs with cool, artificial life, the world dissolved into a bright, chaotic blur of flashing red and blue lights, rushing medics, and the comforting, familiar wail of my son being scooped up into the safe arms of a female officer.

They wheeled me out of the house on a stretcher, the morning sunlight burning my eyes as I was loaded into the back of an ambulance. As the doors slammed shut and the siren began its frantic wail, I closed my eyes and prayed to whatever gods were listening that they caught him before he reached the mountains.
