Chapter 3 - The Web of Deceit

The hotel room felt as though it had shrunk, the oxygen burning away, replaced by the suffocating weight of decades-old secrets. Garrett stared at Lindsay, his mouth opening and closing like a landed fish.
"Half... half-sister?" Garrett choked out, the words tasting foreign and horrific on his tongue. "Are you out of your mind? You're... you're my mistress! We slept together!"
Lindsay threw her head back and let out a sharp, mocking laugh that cut through the silence like a razor blade. "Oh, did that shock you, big brother? Did the thought of incest make your stomach turn? Too bad you didn't check my background before you decided to cheat on your saintly wife with every pretty face that crossed your path!"
Martha let out a strangled cry, her hands flying to her face as she stumbled backward, collapsing heavily onto the edge of the unmade bed. The foundation of her entire life—her marriage, her status, her family's immaculate reputation—was crumbling into dust before her very eyes.
"Arthur..." Martha sobbed, her voice hollow and broken. "Forty years... you lied to me for forty years. You had another family?"
"It wasn't a family, Martha, I swear to God," Arthur pleaded, stumbling forward to kneel beside his wife, though she recoiled from his touch as if he carried the plague. "It was a mistake from a lifetime ago, before we were even married, a summer job in the valley—"
"A mistake?" Lindsay screamed, her voice echoing off the motel's cheap acoustic ceiling. "My mother gave up everything for you! She carried your child while you walked away to marry the rich banker's daughter and secure your promotion! You destroyed us!"
I stood near the doorway, watching the Greek tragedy unfold with a detached, chilling clarity. While Garrett stared in horror at his new reality and Martha wept over the ruin of her marriage, my mind was racing through the legal and financial implications of what had just been exposed.
Garrett’s betrayal was no longer just a marital indiscretion. It was an entry point for a calculated, venomous act of revenge. Lindsay hadn't stumbled into Garrett’s life by accident. She had hunted him down, engineered the affair, and lured him into this trap with surgical precision.
"You planned this," I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the screaming and sobbing.
Lindsay stopped pacing and turned her sharp, calculating gaze toward me. A thin, knowing smile touched her lips. "I did, Elena. I really did. Your husband is remarkably predictable. Show him a little attention, stroke his fragile ego, and he’ll throw his entire life away without a second thought."
"You used him to get to Arthur," I stated, stepping further into the room, refusing to cower.
"I used him to get to everything," Lindsay corrected smoothly, walking over to the bedside table and picking up a thick manila folder that had been hidden beneath a laptop. She pulled out several sheets of paper covered in dense legal text. "You see, dear sister-in-law, Arthur Campbell is a very wealthy man. Real estate, commercial developments, local bank shares. And since Garrett is his only son, Garrett was set to inherit a multi-million-dollar empire."
She tapped the documents against her palm. "Unfortunately for Garrett, a man who commits gross moral turpitude and breaches his fiduciary marital duties tends to find himself divorced with very little. And a family facing catastrophic public scandal is remarkably willing to sign over assets just to make a problem go away."
Garrett finally snapped out of his paralyzed shock. He lunged toward Lindsay, his face contorted with rage. "You bitch! You set me up! You planned all of this to extort my family!"
Before Garrett could reach her, Arthur scrambled up from the floor with surprising agility for a man his age, stepping between his son and the woman he had abandoned decades ago.
"Don't you touch her!" Arthur roared, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and fierce protection.
Garrett stopped dead, staring at his father in absolute betrayal. "Dad? You're defending her? She just destroyed our lives!"

"She's my daughter, Garrett," Arthur whispered, tears carving tracks through the dust on his face. "And this is the harvest of the seeds I planted thirty years ago."
Lindsay smiled coldly, sliding the legal documents back into the folder. "Save the dramatic fatherly speeches, Uncle Arty. The real fun hasn't even started yet. You see, these papers aren't just an extortion demand. They are a transfer of ownership for Garrett’s stake in the family business. And if you don't sign them by tomorrow morning, I’m releasing the full story—complete with DNA confirmation of our shared parentage and Garrett’s delightful little motel habits—to every major news outlet in the state."
