Chapter 4 - The Trap Springs at Ten

By 9:45 PM, the atmosphere inside our house had grown suffocatingly tense. My mother and Brittany sat in the living room drinking expensive wine, acting as though nothing extraordinary had happened, occasionally throwing condescending glances toward the guest room where Claire was locked safely inside.
I sat quietly at the kitchen island, cleaning my service-issued combat knife with a small whetstone, the rhythmic sching-sching sound echoing through the house like a ticking clock.
At exactly 9:57 PM, the low rumble of a heavy engine echoed from the street outside. Two car doors slammed shut in rapid succession. Heavy, purposeful footsteps crunched across our gravel driveway.
A heavy fist pounded twice against our front door.
My mother immediately leaped off the sofa, smoothing her designer blouse, wearing a masterclass performance of panicked distress. She threw a frantic look toward me.
"Ethan! They're back! Those violent men Claire brought onto our property!" my mother cried out, rushing toward the hallway. "Lock your doors! They're going to kill us all!"
"Open it, Mom," I said, my voice dangerously calm as I stood up from the island, slipping the knife neatly into my belt sheath.
Before she could fake another sob, I walked past her, grabbed the deadbolt, and threw the heavy front door wide open.
The cold night air rushed into the foyer. Standing on the porch were the two heavy-set thugs from the dashcam footage, wearing dark leather jackets and holding a thick leather portfolio folder.
The taller man stepped forward, flashing a smirking grin. "Margaret, you said soldier boy wasn't coming home until—"
He stopped dead in his tracks as the overhead porch light illuminated my face. Color instantly drained from his rugged features.
"Oh," I said quietly, stepping out onto the porch and blocking the doorway. "You were saying?"
The thug swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically toward my mother, who stood frozen in horror behind me. "We... we have business here. We need the wife's signature before ten o'clock. Standard debt assignment."
"Is that right?" I pulled my phone out of my pocket, tapping the screen to bring up the video files and financial records. "Because according to my records, these debts belong to my sister Brittany, and the forgery scheme belongs to my mother. And according to the police department cruiser sitting quietly with its lights off at the end of our driveway right now, you two gentlemen are about to spend a very long time explaining extortion and interstate financial fraud to a federal judge."
From the shadows of the street corner, the brilliant red-and-blue flash of police cruisers suddenly illuminated the entire neighborhood. Four armed officers poured out of the vehicles, swarming up our lawn with weapons drawn and ready.

The two thugs didn't even try to run. They dropped their leather portfolio onto the welcome mat, raised their hands slowly into the air, and dropped to their knees as the cold steel cuffs snapped onto their wrists.
Inside the hallway, my mother let out a high-pitched, hysterical shriek and collapsed against the wall, while Brittany dropped her designer wine glass onto the hardwood, watching in wide-eyed, catatonic shock as her entire criminal house of cards imploded in real-time.
