Chapter 4 - Unlocking the Nightmare

The deputies dropped to their knees in the dirt, abandoning protocol as they scrambled to help us pry the heavy lid completely off the casket. The afternoon sun beat down on the open box, illuminating a horrific scene: Elena’s face was bruised and tear-streaked, her fingernails caked in dried blood where she had clawed desperately at the satin lining of the lid in total darkness.

She wasn't dead. She had never been dead.

"Get an ambulance here now! Call paramedics!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, tearing off my suit jacket and wrapping it around her shivering, emaciated frame.

Elena blinked against the blinding glare of the sun, her lips blue, her chest rising and falling in shallow, desperate gasps. She looked up at me with eyes wide with terror, her fingers clutching my shirt as if she were falling from a cliff.

"Clara..." she whispered, coughing violently as fresh air flooded her lungs. "She gave me the injection... at the clinic... she said it was a vitamin booster..."

Above us, secured in the handcuffs, my sister stopped thrashing. Her head slumped forward against her chest, all the fight draining out of her as she realized the absolute, inescapable magnitude of her crime. The web of lies she had meticulously spun over the past year—forged medical records, stolen trust funds, and a meticulously timed pharmacological paralysis designed to mimic death—had completely unraveled in less than ten minutes.

Paramedics arrived with sirens wailing, rushing down the grassy slope with oxygen tanks and a stretcher. They lifted Elena out of the dark, damp confines of the casket and placed her gently into the medical sled. As they wheeled her toward the ambulance, she reached out one weak hand and grabbed Mateo, pulling him close to her chest.

The boy buried his face in her neck, finally breaking down into uncontrollable tears of relief. The nightmare was over. The dead had returned to the living.

Clara was shoved into the back of the county cruiser, her face averted from the flashing cameras of local reporters who had already begun gathering at the cemetery gates. Dr. Harrison was arrested less than an hour later at his private clinic, his office computers seized by federal investigators uncovering a vast network of medical fraud and staged fatalities orchestrated for financial gain.

By evening, the hospital room was bathed in the warm, golden glow of a setting sun. Elena lay propped up against crisp white pillows, color slowly returning to her cheeks as an IV drip steadily restored her strength.

Mateo sat curled up beside her on the mattress, fast asleep with his small hand resting securely inside hers. Every few minutes, out of pure instinct, his thumb would trace three slow circles against her palm.

And every single time, without fail, Elena’s fingers would gently press back in rhythm.

Tap, tap, tap.
