Chapter 3 - The Audit

The morning sun filtered through the high, arched windows of the hospital room, casting long golden shafts of light across Lily’s bed. By 8:00 AM, my daughter’s color had returned to a healthy, rosy pink. Her dark curls were spread across the pillow, and she was currently engrossed in an animated cartoon on her tablet, happily spooning up vanilla pudding that the hospital kitchen had cleared for her recovery diet.

"Mom," Lily said, looking up from her screen with big, innocent brown eyes. "When can we go home? My tummy feels completely normal now."

"Soon, sweetheart," I smiled, leaning down to kiss her forehead, ensuring my voice carried absolute warmth and zero trace of the nuclear-grade corporate warfare raging in the background of my life. "The doctor just wants to run one final round of observation tests this afternoon. If everything looks good, daddy and I will pack you up and bring you home."

Lily’s expression flickered slightly, a shadow of hesitation crossing her young face. "Did daddy call? He said he was going to bring me my favorite strawberry smoothie yesterday afternoon... right before my throat started feeling all scratchy and tight."

My heart clenched painfully, not for Grant, but for the casual, habitual disappointment he inflicted upon our daughter. Grant had promised her that smoothie three times over the past week, only to flake at the last second whenever a more appealing social engagement popped up.

"He had a sudden, very important travel emergency, Lily," I answered carefully, choosing my words with absolute precision to protect her. "But don't you worry about him. Your mother has everything completely under control."

Leaving Lily in the capable, attentive hands of Dr. Vance and a private pediatric nurse I had retained for the day, I stepped out into the quiet hospital corridor and pulled out my laptop. It was time to initiate Phase Two.

I opened a secure encrypted video link to corporate headquarters at Mercer Capital.

Within three seconds, my executive assistant Claire’s face popped up on the high-resolution screen, looking entirely professional despite the early hour.

"Good morning, Evelyn," Claire said briskly. "I received your encrypted text directives at 4:00 AM. Legal and forensic accounting teams are already standing by. What are your exact orders regarding Mr. Sinclair?"

"I want a complete, comprehensive forensic financial audit of every personal and auxiliary account linked to Grant Sinclair over the past three years," I instructed, my voice cutting through the digital air with razor-sharp authority. "Every corporate expense reimbursement, every discretionary credit line, and every asset purchase. I want to know every cent he has siphoned, mismanaged, or hidden."

"Understood," Claire nodded, typing rapidly on her keyboard. "Initial preliminary scans already flagged something interesting, Evelyn. About six months ago, Mr. Sinclair established an independent secondary line of credit using our residential property as collateral, utilizing a forged signature power of attorney. Our legal compliance team caught it, but we flagged it for your personal review before taking action."

A cold spike of adrenaline shot through my veins. "A forged signature?"

"Yes. It appears he attempted to secure a quarter-million-dollar liquidity loan to fund a high-risk private equity venture with some associates in New York—associates who, coincidentally, have historical ties to several dubious offshore shell companies."

I stared at the screen, the pieces of the puzzle clicking together with terrifying clarity. Grant hadn't just been cheating on me emotionally and physically; he had been systematically trying to loot our marital estate behind my back, betting my hard-earned capital on speculative ventures while treating our marriage as his personal ATM.

"Compile all documentation regarding that forged power of attorney immediately," I ordered, my tone dropping an octave into absolute ice. "Prepare the paperwork for immediate civil fraud litigation and asset seizure. I want every single vehicle, luxury watch, club membership, and personal possession he acquired during our marriage tagged for repossession under our prenuptial asset protection clauses."

"Consider it done, Evelyn," Claire said, a fierce, loyal smile touching her lips. "Shall I have our corporate security team lock him out of the main estate as well?"

"No," I replied softly, closing my laptop screen halfway. "Let him stew in the empty house for a few more hours. Let him realize that the man who thought he owned the world is actually standing completely naked in an empty room."

I disconnected the call, took a deep breath of the sterile hospital air, and turned back toward Lily’s room. The battle lines were drawn. And by the time the sun set tonight, Grant Sinclair was going to learn what happens when you cross a woman who builds empires for a living.
