Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Web

While Clara was admitted to the hospital for observation and intravenous stabilization under the care of a trusted medical team, I remained at the house with Officer Miller to deal with the fallout.

Helen was sitting downstairs on the living room sofa, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, tapping her foot with impatient irritation. She assumed her status, her wealth, and her online following would shield her from any real consequences. She looked up as I walked into the living room, her face twisting into a mask of bitter accusation.

"I hope you're happy, Arthur," Helen snapped, her voice sharp and devoid of warmth. "You've completely humiliated me. After everything I've sacrificed for this family—building your brand, paying off your old college debts, watching your child—you throw me to the wolves for a hysterical woman who can't even handle basic motherhood?"

"Stop talking, Helen," I said, my voice cutting through her tirade like a knife.

"Don't you dare speak to me that way!" she shrieked, standing up. "My followers will hear about this. I'll go live right now. I'll tell them how ungrateful my son and his unstable wife are. By tonight, your lives will be completely destroyed!"

She lunged toward the changing table in the hallway where she had left her phone.

Before her fingers could even graze the plastic casing, Officer Miller stepped forward and blocked her path. He reached down, picked up the phone, and slipped it into an evidence bag.

"What are you doing?!" Helen shrieked, her face flushing a mottled red. "That is my personal property! Give me that phone right now!"

"Ms. Vance, this phone is now evidence in an active criminal investigation," Officer Miller said smoothly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are being placed under arrest for domestic abuse, reckless endangerment of a minor, extortion, and unlawful coercion of a medical patient."

The color drained entirely from Helen's face. The righteous fury vanished instantly, replaced by a sudden, frantic panic. "Arrested? Are you out of your mind? Do you know who I am? I have half a million followers! I'm an influencer! You can't arrest me!"

"Cell service doesn't grant diplomatic immunity, Ms. Vance," Officer Miller replied coldly as he clicked the handcuffs shut around her wrists. "And as for your followers? We've already secured the full unedited footage from the nursery camera. We are currently transmitting it directly to the cybercrime and public safety divisions. Your management team has already been notified that your accounts are being flagged for review pending criminal charges."

Helen let out a choked gasp, her knees buckling slightly as the reality of her situation finally crashed down upon her. All her life, she had used manipulation, social standing, and calculated lies to control everyone around her. She had believed her digital illusion was stronger than reality. But reality had finally caught up.

As the officers escorted her out of the front door in handcuffs, neighbors peered curiously through their window blinds. The flashing lights of the police cruisers illuminated her face—not as the smiling, benevolent matriarch of her online videos, but as a cornered fraud finally facing justice.

I stood in the doorway, watching her get into the back of the cruiser. I didn't feel joy, and I didn't feel hate. I felt a profound, cleansing emptiness—the kind that comes after a festering wound has finally been completely cleaned out.
