Chapter 4 - The Vultures Circle

The knock came again, heavier this time, followed by the dull rattle of the doorknob shaking in its frame.

“Nora? Open up, we know you’re in there,” a sharp, aggressive male voice called out from the hallway.

Panic surged through my veins. I didn't know who was on the other side, but I knew instinctively that the green backpack and its multi-million-dollar contents were the reason they were hammering at my door. My eyes darted frantically around the small kitchen. I couldn't hide the stacks of bonds and property deeds fast enough.

The doorknob turned violently. The cheap rental lock groaned under the strain.

Realizing I had seconds before the door gave way, I grabbed the heavy canvas backpack, shoved the legal documents and bearer bonds back inside in a chaotic heap, zipped the main compartment shut without locking it, and sprinted toward my bedroom just as the front door splintered open with a loud, deafening crash.

Footsteps pounded across my kitchen floor.

“Check the back rooms! She’s here, the bag is freshly moved!” a second voice snarled—a woman’s voice, cold, sharp, and dripping with venom.

I locked my bedroom door from the inside, my heart hammering like a jackhammer against my ribs. I grabbed my phone from the nightstand, my fingers trembling so badly I could barely swipe the screen to dial emergency services.

Before the call could connect, heavy wood splintered right beside the doorknob. A heavy hand reached through the fractured panel, blindly groping for the interior lock.

With a desperate cry, I hurled myself forward, kicking my heavy wooden dresser across the floor to wedge it hard against the failing bedroom door just as a shoulder slammed violently against the exterior panel.

“Open this door right now, you little gold-digging parasite!” shrieked the female voice from the hallway. I recognized the pitch instantly—it was sharp, entitled, and filled with incandescent rage.

It was Victoria Sterling, Julian’s estranged niece and corporate successor, who had spent the last twenty years assuming her uncle’s estate would eventually default into her greedy hands.

“You have thirty seconds to hand over the backpack, or we will strip you of everything you own before the sun sets!” a man shouted—Marcus Vance, Victoria’s ruthless corporate attorney, whose voice matched the man who had tried to intimidate me outside the hospital weeks ago.

They weren't just here for the money. They were here to erase the marriage, invalidate the will, and ensure that anyone who knew the truth about Julian’s final days disappeared permanently.

Pinned against my bed, clutching the heavy green backpack to my chest like a shield, I stared at the shaking bedroom door as the wood began to splinter completely apart under their relentless assault. I knew I couldn't fight them physically. But looking down at the legal documents sticking halfway out of the side pocket—documents bearing the official seal of federal validation and Julian’s final, unassailable signature—I realized I didn't need to fight them with fists.

I had something far more powerful: Julian’s final, legally binding truth.

And as the top panel of the door finally gave way with a deafening crack, I stood up tall, took a deep breath, and prepared to face the wolves who thought they could steal my husband’s legacy.
