Chapter 2 - The Whispers In The Clinic And The Missing File

As my pregnancy progressed into the second trimester, my body adapted to the incredible demands of carrying a new life, but my instincts began picking up on subtle, unsettling shifts in Chloe’s behavior. While Julian remained his attentive, protective, and affectionate self—calling me every morning before work and bringing me organic groceries—Chloe grew increasingly distant whenever medical appointments rolled around.

At first, I chalked it up to the unpredictable emotional roller coaster of impending motherhood, especially for a woman who had spent years mourning her inability to conceive naturally. But then came the routine anatomy scan at twenty weeks at the downtown reproductive clinic where their fertility file was officially housed.

Normally, Chloe attended every single ultrasound, vibrating with excitement and taking countless photos of the monitor screen to post in our family group chat. However, on the morning of the twenty-week scan, Chloe called with a frantic excuse about a sudden client emergency at her architectural firm, claiming she couldn't make it. Julian looked visibly relieved for a fraction of a second before masking it with a disappointed sigh.

"Don't worry, sis," Julian said as we drove together to the clinic in his truck. "Chloe is just overwhelmed with the nursery renovations. You know how perfectionist she gets."

"I know," I replied quietly, staring out the passenger window at the gray cityscape. "It just feels strange not having her here for the milestone scans."

At the clinic, Dr. Evans, our reproductive endocrinologist, greeted us with his usual warm professionalism. The ultrasound technician, a kind woman named Sarah who had guided us through the embryo transfer months prior, prepped the room. As the cold gel hit my bare abdomen and the thermal wand glided across my skin, the monitor flickered to life, revealing a strong, beating heart and a tiny, active baby girl kicking her legs in rhythm.

"Everything looks pristine," Dr. Evans smiled, pointing to the screen. "Growth metrics are right on target. Amniotic fluid levels are ideal. She's going to be a strong, healthy little girl."

While Sarah wiped the gel from my stomach and helped me button my maternity jeans, Dr. Evans stepped out to pull the physical master chart for final sign-off. Julian excused himself to use the men’s room down the hall, leaving me alone in the examination suite for a few moments.

Resting on the counter right beside the sink was an open manila folder labeled with Julian and Chloe’s last name—their master fertility clinic file.

Normally, medical privacy ethics would have kept my hands off personal files, but something deep inside my gut—a cold, prickling intuition born from months of unspoken tension—commanded my attention. I glanced toward the closed door, listened for Julian’s footsteps in the hallway, and stepped across the linoleum floor.

I opened the folder.

My eyes scanned the medical intake forms, the insurance billing codes, and the genetic pairing disclosures. Most of it looked standard, detailing the egg retrieval and fertilization logs. But as I flipped to the back page—specifically the mandatory legal donor disclosure addendum that my attorney had insisted upon—my breath hitched violently in my throat.

Printed clearly under the header Gamete Source Verification - Oocyte Retrieval was a name and biological profile code.

It was not Chloe’s name.

The donor egg was harvested from an anonymous 24-year-old medical graduate student matching Chloe’s physical phenotype, procured through an elite international egg donor agency three weeks after our legal surrogacy contract had already been signed, notarized, and filed with the court.

Staring up at me from the page was undeniable proof that Chloe's eggs had completely failed during the fertilization cycle, and instead of telling me—instead of abiding by our strict legal contract that required immediate disclosure and re-approval of any outside donor material—Julian and Chloe had secretly substituted an anonymous donor, hoping I would never find out because the baby would still carry Julian's biological DNA.

The world in the sterile white examination room seemed to tilt sideways. The hum of the medical equipment faded into a dull, agonizing roar in my ears. I wasn't just carrying my brother and his wife's biological child; I was an unwitting participant in a calculated deception, carrying a stranger's genetic material while being lied to every single day by the twin brother I loved more than life itself.
