Chapter 2 - The Sighting and the Scream

"Dispatch, she's back!" I screamed into the phone, gripping the steering wheel so hard my knuckles turned white. "Someone just walked into the nursery!"

On the small display mounted to my dashboard, the infrared camera captured a figure stepping fully into the frame. It was Chloe, dressed not in the sensible loungewear she had worn when my husband and I departed, but in a tight, sequined silver party dress, a designer crossbody purse slung over one shoulder, and her car keys dangling from her fingers. She had clearly just returned from a night out with her boyfriend, completely unbothered by the ticking clock of a mother's worst nightmare.

Chloe stepped right up to the side of the crib. She leaned over the wooden railing, looking directly down at my son. On the high-definition black-and-white feed, I could clearly see Leo’s eyes wide with terror, his chest rising in shallow, desperate gasps around the silver strip of tape sealing his mouth.

Instead of crying out in horror, instead of frantically tearing away the blanket and ripping off the tape, Chloe simply stared at him for a long, calculating second.

Then, she reached her hand out—not toward the baby, but straight toward the security camera mounted in the corner.

That was when the horrifying truth crashed down upon my soul with the force of a tidal wave: She hadn't accidentally forgotten him. She hadn't made a careless mistake. She knew the camera was there, she knew we could see her live feed, and she was deliberately walking over to disable it so her party lifestyle wouldn't be interrupted by police or angry parents.

"No, no, no!" I shrieked at the dashboard screen, my voice cracking with absolute hysteria.

I hit the intercom button on the camera application, activating the two-way speaker built directly into the nursery unit. My voice blasted out through the small speaker in the quiet room with earth-shattering volume.

"CHLOE! DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH THAT CAMERA!"

On the screen, the girl froze instantly. Her hand hovered inches away from the lens, her fingers twitching in shock.

"TAKE THE TAPE OFF MY BABY. RIGHT NOW!" I roared, tears streaming down my face as I wove my SUV aggressively through late-night traffic, laying on my horn at a red light.

Chloe’s head snapped violently toward the camera, her eyes wide with sudden, animalistic panic. The realization that she had been caught red-handed in real-time drained every ounce of color from her face. She dropped her designer purse onto the rocking chair with a dull thud, spun around, and lunged forward, frantically reaching down into the crib to peel the duct-tape away from Leo’s face.

Before her fingernails could even catch the edge of the adhesive, a concussive sound echoed through my phone speaker—a series of massive, thunderous pounds against my front door.

THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!

"They're at the door!" the 911 dispatcher shouted over the line. "Officers are breaching the perimeter now!"

On the nursery feed, Chloe whipped her head toward the hallway, her mouth hanging open in sheer terror as heavy, tactical boots rushed up the stairs.

A split second later, two uniformed police officers burst violently into the camera frame, weapons drawn and low, shouting commands. One officer immediately moved to block the doorway, grabbing Chloe by the arm and shoving her backward against the wall with authoritative force. The second officer rushed straight to the crib, dropping his flashlight and instantly pulling out a trauma-shears blade.

With practiced, lightning-fast precision, the first responder sliced through the heavy wool blanket, unwrapping the suffocating cocoon, and ripped the duct-tape clean off my baby's face.

For several unbearable, agonizing seconds, the nursery feed went completely silent. No movement. No sound. Just the heavy breathing of the officers echoing through my phone speaker.

Then, a weak, high-pitched, furious wail pierced the air.

My baby cried.

I nearly dropped the steering wheel as a sob tore out of my throat, my entire body shaking with immense, overwhelming relief.

"He's breathing! He's crying! Vital signs are stabilizing!" the officer shouted into his shoulder radio.

I slammed my foot down on the gas pedal, tearing down our residential street, tires squealing as I rounded the final corner toward our house.
