Chapter 2 - The Maui Sunset and the First Crack

Four thousand miles away, the tropical breeze of Maui carried the scent of hibiscus and salt water across the veranda of the luxury resort suite. Ethan leaned back against a plush lounge chair, a tall glass of rum punch sweating in his hand, while Patricia, his doting mother, adjusted her oversized designer sunglasses and beamed proudly.

"Honestly, Ethan, it’s about time you put your foot down," Patricia said, sipping her mimosa with an air of supreme satisfaction. "Natalie was getting far too arrogant. Acting like she owns the place just because she sits around the house all day. A little tough love will teach her her place."

"Exactly," Ethan agreed, scrolling mindlessly through his phone while his sister Megan splashed in the infinity pool. "She’ll panic for a day or two, call her sister, and realize she can't survive without my financial support. By the time we fly back next week, she’ll be tamed, the nursery will be spotless, and she won't dare question my authority again."

Right on cue, Ethan’s phone chimed with an email notification. He glanced down, expecting a frantic, tearful message from me begging for the door code, pleading for grocery money, or asking when he’d return.

Instead, the notification was a formal electronic alert from the county property tax and title registry: NOTICE OF RECORDED GRANT DEED TRANSFER – BROOKHAVEN ESTATE.

Ethan frowned, sitting up straight in his lounger. He squinted at the screen, tapping the link. His thumb hovered over the glass as his eyes scanned the legal header. The property ID matched our home down to the exact parcel number. But the listed grantor wasn't him. It wasn't even joint. It was transferred under an exclusive, irrevocable trust assignment executed at 4:15 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, bearing a signature that made his blood run instantly cold.

Natalie Sterling.

"What the..." Ethan muttered, his voice dropping into a confused murmur.

"What is it, sweetie?" Patricia asked lazily, not looking up from her magazine. "Did Natalie text you an apology?"

"No," Ethan said, standing up so abruptly his lounge chair scraped loudly against the stone tile. His heart began to hammer against his ribs with a sudden, sickening thud. "My phone... I got an alert from the county recorder. It says... it says the Brookhaven house has been transferred."

Megan swam over to the edge of the pool, wiping water from her face and laughing. "Transferred? To who? Us? Did you finally put the deed in Mom's name like she wanted?"

"No," Ethan breathed, his skin turning pasty under the Hawaiian sun. "To an institutional cash buyer. Sold. In full. Effective immediately."

The silence that fell over the luxury patio was absolute. Patricia’s mimosa glass slipped from her fingers, shattering against the stone floor with a sharp, explosive crash that made nearby tourists turn their heads.

"Sold?" Patricia screeched, scrambling up from her chair, her face contorting into pure, unadulterated panic. "What do you mean, sold?! That’s our family estate! That’s where my bridge club meets! Call her right now, Ethan! Call her right this second and tell her to cancel it!"

Ethan’s hands were shaking so violently he dropped his phone onto the lounge cushions before finally grabbing it with both fists. He dialed my number—the exact same number he had blocked, ignored, and hung up on less than twenty-four hours ago.

The phone rang once. Twice. Three times.

On the fourth ring, a calm, cool, utterly emotionless voice answered:

"You have reached Natalie Sterling. Please leave a message after the tone."
