Chapter 5 - A New Beginning at the Top

Monday morning arrived with a bright, crisp Chicago sun cutting sharply through the glass partitions of the Russo Syndicate headquarters. The office was buzzing with its usual frenzied energy—telephones ringing softly, men in sharp suits murmuring in Italian near the elevators, and the distant hum of the downtown traffic rising from the street below.
At 8:28 a.m., the elevator doors chimed.
Chloe stepped out onto the forty-second floor. She was wearing her usual tailored charcoal skirt and a fitted white silk blouse, but there was something fundamentally different about her. Her shoulders were back, her chin was high, and her step on the thick carpet was light, confident, and entirely unhesitating.
She walked past Jessica’s desk in accounting. Jessica looked up from her spreadsheet with a knowing, conspiratorial grin, raising her coffee mug in silent salute. Chloe just smiled back, a warm, secret flush rising to her cheeks.
She approached the heavy mahogany double doors of Dominic’s private office.
Before she could even lift her hand to knock, the door swung open.
Dominic stood in the doorway. He was dressed in a pristine charcoal bespoke suit, his dark hair immaculate, his sharp features framed by the morning light. He looked every bit the ruthless, untouchable syndicate boss that the criminal underworld feared.
Then, his dark eyes met hers, and that cold, intimidating exterior melted away into something intensely personal and warm.
"You're early," Dominic noted, his voice carrying that familiar, low resonance that sent a delicious shiver straight down her spine.
"Traffic was light," Chloe replied smoothly, stepping past him into the office—though this time, she didn't stop at the edge of his desk with a folder pressed like a shield against her chest.
Instead, she turned around to face him as he closed the heavy mahogany door behind them with a soft, secure click.
Dominic didn't walk back to his massive leather chair behind the blueprints. He stopped just inches away from her, his dark eyes sparkling with a quiet amusement and an undeniable possessiveness.
"The zoning proposal for the Northside docks is on your desk," Chloe said, her voice steady, clear, and laced with a playful confidence she had never dared show him before. "I fixed the comma on page four. And page seven. And I added an addendum regarding your shipping tariffs that will save the syndicate about four million dollars this quarter."
Dominic looked down at her, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his handsome face. He reached out, his strong fingers looping gently around her waist and pulling her effortlessly against his chest, right in the middle of his office, in broad daylight.
"Four million dollars," Dominic murmured, his breath warm against her ear. "And how do you plan on collecting your bonus, Miss Vance?"
Chloe wrapped her arms loosely around his neck, looking up into those deep, bitter-chocolate eyes without a single trace of fear, only a thrilling sense of belonging.
"I think," she whispered against his lips, "you can start by taking me out for dinner tonight—somewhere that doesn't smell like bleach or cheap beer."
May you like
Dominic laughed—a rich, genuine sound that few people in this city had ever heard—before pulling her in for a slow, breathtaking kiss that sealed their new reality once and for all.
Outside the heavy doors, the world kept turning, but inside, the shy assistant and the feared mafia boss had finally found their balance. And neither of them was ever going to let go.
