Chapter 5 - Reign of the Lion and the Rose

Three months later, the Mediterranean sun beat down warm and golden on the terrace of Villa Balaki, turning the terraced vineyards and the distant slopes of Mount Etna into a postcard of Sicilian perfection.
The war with the Valeri family was a distant memory. With Donato fled and Marco serving a life sentence in a high-security federal penitentiary across the mainland, the underground syndicate of Palermo was entirely unified under a single banner.
Inside the grand study, the heavy mahogany desk was clear of ledgers and weapons, replaced instead by a crystal decanter of aged whiskey and two crystal glasses catching the afternoon light.
Celeste stood by the open French doors, wearing a sleek emerald-green silk dress that caught the breeze, her dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders. The five years of bitterness, the sleepless nights plotting revenge, the cold armor she had built around her heart — all of it had melted away, replaced by something far more enduring and far more powerful.
Footsteps approached softly behind her.
Strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a solid, warm chest. A familiar chin rested gently on her shoulder, and the scent of cedar and expensive whiskey filled her senses.
"Penny for your thoughts, signora," Renzo murmured, his deep voice vibrating against her spine.
Celeste leaned back into his embrace, tilting her head up so he could press a warm, lingering kiss to the side of her neck.
"I was just thinking about the night I snuck into your room," she murmured, a playful smirk touching her lips. "If I had known you were going to turn out to be such a softie, I would have brought a bottle of wine instead of a knife."
Renzo chuckled, a rich, deep sound that had been entirely foreign to him three months ago, and spun her around in his arms so she was facing him. He looked down at her with eyes full of a fierce, absolute devotion that he reserved for her alone.
"If you had brought wine instead of a knife," Renzo whispered, his hands sliding down to grip her waist securely, "I probably would have had my men throw you out the front gate by dawn."
"Liar," she teased, reaching up to thread her fingers through his dark hair. "You were captivated the second I opened your bedroom door."
"Unquestionably," Renzo admitted without a second of hesitation. He leaned down, his lips brushing hers lightly before pulling back just an inch. "You walked into my house looking for vengeance, Celeste. And you ended up taking over my entire empire instead."
"Your empire needed a little redecorating," she replied smoothly. "Too much gray stone, not enough life."
"Then it's a good thing I have the most dangerous woman in Sicily to keep it vibrant," Renzo said softly.

He pulled her flush against his chest, their lips meeting in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed the past, the blood, and the long years of waiting into nothing more than a prelude to their future.
Outside on the hills of Palermo, Mount Etna smoked quietly against the blue sky — a sleeping giant guarded by a lion and a rose who had found their peace at last, reigning over a kingdom built on truth, power, and an unbreakable, eternal love.
