Chapter 3 - The Airport Interception

Miles away at the international terminal of Metro Metropolitan Airport, the fluorescent lights of Gate B22 felt less like a gateway to freedom and more like the interrogation room of a maximum-security prison.
Daniel Miller stood frozen in front of the boarding counter, his knuckles pressed white against the polished laminate surface. Beads of cold sweat had formed along his hairline, staining his expensive silk tie. Behind him, Chloe Ruiz was pacing frantically back and forth, her designer luggage clattering against the linoleum as surrounding passengers threw annoyed, suspicious glances in their direction.
“Sir, I’m sorry, but this card has been declined due to a total account suspension,” the gate agent repeated for the third time, her voice polite but firm as she handed the black Centurion card back across the counter. “Furthermore, your boarding pass has been flagged by federal security protocols. You’ll need to step aside and wait for airport authority personnel.”
“There’s been a mistake!” Daniel hissed, his voice cracking with rising hysteria as he leaned over the counter. “Look up my corporate profile! I am the executive vice president of Sterling Global! Call the CFO directly! This is a temporary administrative glitch!”
“Step away from the counter, Mr. Miller.”
The deep, authoritative voice didn’t belong to the gate agent. Daniel spun around sharply, his heart hammering against his ribs. Standing behind him were two uniformed federal marshals, flanked by airport security detail. Their expressions were carved from granite, and their hands rested casually near the heavy holsters at their waists.
“What is the meaning of this?” Chloe shrieked, marching up to the marshals with her finger pointed accusingly. “Do you know who we are? We are elite international executives! We have connecting flights to Zurich! You can’t just—!”
“Chloe, shut up!” Daniel snapped, his face turning an ash-gray as he realized the terrifying reality of his situation. He turned back to the marshals, forcing a desperate, trembling smile onto his lips. “Gentlemen, there’s no need for this. It’s a domestic civil dispute. My wife and I just had a disagreement over property division. I’m simply taking a business trip—”.
“Mr. Daniel Miller,” the lead marshal interrupted coldly, pulling a crisp legal document from his breast pocket and unfolding it with a sharp snap. “You are being placed under arrest pursuant to a federal bench warrant issued out of the District Court of New York. The charges include grand larceny, wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate espionage.”
The world seemed to tilt violently on its axis.
“No—no, wait!” Daniel stammered, stumbling backward as one of the marshals stepped forward, gripping his forearm with an unyielding iron grip. “You don’t understand! My wife—Audrey—she authorized this! It’s a misunderstanding!”
“Tell it to the judge, counselor,” the marshal muttered, spinning Daniel around and slamming his hands against the counter, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with a metallic clack that echoed loudly through the terminal.
As the cold steel bit into his skin, Daniel caught his reflection in the dark glass of the terminal window. He looked pathetic—a cornered fraudster dressed in a tailored suit, surrounded by designer luggage he couldn't pay for, watching his entire criminal enterprise evaporate in real-time.
Across the aisle, Chloe was already backing away, her eyes wide with animalistic panic, loudly informing anyone who would listen that she barely knew Daniel and had nothing to do with his corporate accounts. The loyal mistress had vanished the second the handcuffs came out.

The marshals roughly hauled Daniel toward the exit doors, dragging him past hundreds of staring travelers who pointed, whispered, and recorded his humiliating downfall on their smartphones. As the automatic glass doors slid open, letting in the cold morning wind, Daniel finally understood the brutal, inescapable truth of his master plan:
He hadn't left me with nothing. He had walked straight into a trap I had set with surgical precision, and there was no way out.
