Chapter 4 - The Secret Phone Call That Shook the Foundation

Before anyone could answer the chime, the front door—which Justin had left unlocked when bringing in groceries earlier—swung open.
Standing in the entryway was Aunt Brenda’s adult son, Marcus, who had apparently driven up from San Francisco to join them for the weekend. He held a phone in his hand, his expression grim, pale, and deeply conflicted.
"Mom... Aunt Virginia... you guys need to see this right now," Marcus said, his voice tight and breathless as he walked into the dining room.
Brenda frowned, adjusting her designer jacket. "Marcus, what on earth are you talking about? We are in the middle of a family emergency here."
"No, Mom, you don't understand," Marcus said, stepping closer to the table and setting his phone down on the polished wood. "I was at Aunt Virginia’s house in Bakersfield yesterday to pick up some mail for her. While I was there, her landline was forwarding calls to her cell phone, which was left sitting on the kitchen counter. A voicemail notification popped up, and it was playing out loud through the speakerphone system."
Virginia’s face instantly lost every drop of color. The crimson rage vanished, replaced by a sudden, shivering panic. She lunged forward, trying to grab the phone. "Marcus! Don't you dare touch that! It’s a private conversation!"
"It’s not private anymore, Aunt Virginia," Marcus said coldly, stepping back out of her reach. He tapped the screen and pressed play.
The tinny, amplified audio of a recorded phone call filled the silent dining room.
“...Oh, Brenda, you just have to come up this weekend,” Virginia’s recorded voice sang out through the speaker, dripping with absolute malice. “The apartment is pathetic. Chloe is completely useless around the house—she barely knows how to boil water, and Justin is miserable living with her. I’m orchestrating the whole thing so Justin finally realizes what a mistake he made marrying that nobody. Once we break her down enough, we’ll convince him to move back to Bakersfield with us, and we can finally get rid of her for good.”
The voice echoed against the walls, crystal clear, irrefutable, and damning.
A heavy, suffocating weight dropped over the room.
Justin slowly turned his head to look at his mother. The expression on his face wasn't anger anymore; it was a profound, chilling horror. It was the look of a man watching a monster unmasking herself right in front of his eyes—seeing his mother not as a protective parent, but as a malicious mastermind who had deliberately engineered the destruction of his marriage.
"Mom..." Justin whispered, his voice cracking with a devastation that shook us all to the core. "Is that true? You... you planned this? You came here under the guise of medical appointments just to destroy my wife and drive us apart?"
Virginia shrunk back into her chair, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. Her facade had completely shattered. She had nothing left to hide behind.
"Justin, sweetheart, listen to me, it was just a joke... I was exaggerating..." she stammered, reaching out a trembling hand toward her son.

Justin stepped back, dodging her touch as if her hand were made of fire. He looked at her with pure, unadulterated disgust.
"Pack your bags," Justin said, his voice dead, cold, and final. "Both of you. You are leaving my home tonight."
