Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

Director Vance walked briskly across the lawn, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone patio. She didn't look at the panicked guests or the shattered champagne glasses. She walked straight up to Ethan Graves, who smoothly stood up, yanking my father to his feet and shoving Arthur roughly into the waiting arms of the military police.
"Good evening, Colonel," Director Vance nodded formally, before turning her sharp, piercing gaze toward me. She stopped three feet away, squared her shoulders, and executed a crisp, flawless military salute.
"Agent Whitaker," Director Vance said, her voice ringing with deep, undeniable respect. "It's an honor to finally see you standing. We've been looking for your operational file for six years."
The surrounding guests stared in stunned, paralyzed silence. The quiet girl who carried trays, refilled ice buckets, and endured daily humiliation as the family servant was suddenly being saluted by a high-ranking Department of Defense official as an active federal asset.
My mother staggered backward, clutching her pearls as if she were having a heart attack. "Agent... agent? No, no, that's impossible! Claire is nothing! She's just... she's our daughter!"
"She was your shield, Mrs. Whitaker," Director Vance corrected coldly, turning her gaze to my mother. "When Agent Whitaker survived the ambush in Eastern Europe, she realized her own father had sold out her unit. Knowing that Arthur Whitaker was protected by high-level political connections, she went underground. She took on a civilian identity, moved back into this house under your complete control, and spent the last three years quietly gathering every encrypted financial transfer, shell-company document, and treasonous communication your husband generated."
I reached into the pocket of my oversized cardigan, pulled out a small, encrypted solid-state drive, and tossed it casually through the air. Ethan Graves caught it effortlessly with one hand.
"Every backup file you need to lock them both away for the rest of their natural lives," I said quietly, my voice steady and cold. "The offshore accounts in the Caymans, the communications logs with foreign brokers, and the signed authorization orders for the hit on my squad."
My father thrashed wildly in the grip of the military police, his face purple with absolute panic. "Claire! Please! We're your family! You can't do this to your own flesh and blood! Think of your mother! Think of Ryan!"
"Family?" I asked, stepping forward until I stood inches away from my trembling father. For the first time in my life, I looked down at him instead of cowering beneath his gaze. "Where was my family when I was lying in a ditch in Eastern Europe waiting for an extraction that never came because you canceled it? Where was my family when you treated me like a ghost in my own home?"
Arthur opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. The mighty General Whitaker, a man who had commanded fear and obedience for decades, was reduced to a broken, sweating coward in a ruined expensive suit.

"Take them away," Director Vance commanded sharply.
The military police didn't hesitate. They hauled my father and my brother—who was also implicated as an accessory for laundering funds through his military housing allowances—toward the waiting black SUVs. My mother collapsed onto the lawn in a heap of designer fabric, sobbing hysterically as her entire fabricated empire crumbled into dust in a matter of minutes.
