Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

By sunrise the following morning, the carefully constructed empire of the Vance family had disintegrated faster than a sandcastle hit by a tidal wave.

The federal indictment against Ethan was unsealed at 8:00 AM sharp, triggering an immediate media frenzy across local news networks and national financial journals. Bold, sensational headlines flashed across television screens and social media feeds: Vanguard Logistics Executive Arrested in Multi-Million Dollar Corporate Embezzlement Ring; FEDERAL AGENTS RAID UPSCALE SUBURBAN RESIDENCE.

Reporters and camera crews flooded our quiet suburban street before dawn, thrusting microphones toward the front gates and attempting to interview anyone who stepped outside. But thanks to the swift, decisive action of my legal team and the local sheriff's department, the perimeter was sealed tight. Victoria and Natalie had been quietly escorted off the property by the county sheriff deputies late last night, forced to pack their designer luggage into a hastily summoned taxi and retreat to a cheap roadside motel on the outskirts of the city, utterly broke and stripped of their social standing.

I sat in the sunlit tranquility of my home office, sipping hot green tea while reviewing the digital logs of my consulting firm. My right arm was still immobilized in the sling, but the dull, throbbing ache in my wrist felt remarkably light compared to the crushing emotional weight that had finally been lifted from my shoulders.

My phone buzzed continuously on the mahogany desk, lighting up with frantic text messages, missed calls, and desperate voice notes from Ethan’s corporate colleagues, distant relatives, and mutual acquaintances who were suddenly scrambling to distance themselves from the unfolding federal scandal.

I didn't answer a single one of them. I simply tapped the screen, blocked their numbers permanently, and forwarded every incoming communication directly to my legal counsel.

Around noon, Richard Vance walked into my office carrying a fresh stack of court filings and a warm smile.

“Well, Sarah, the fallout at Vanguard Logistics is absolute chaos,” Richard announced, taking a seat across from my desk. “The board of directors held an emergency executive session at 9:00 AM. They voted unanimously to terminate Ethan’s employment with immediate cause, forfeit all unvested stock options, and cooperate fully with the U.S. Attorney’s office to recover every dollar of embezzled funds.”

“And the criminal proceedings?” I asked calmly, turning a page of my report.

“Because of the sheer volume of forensic evidence we handed over—including the wire transfer logs, the offshore shell company paper trails, and the audio recordings of Ethan admitting to financial manipulation—federal prosecutors are pushing for a fast-track guilty plea with a recommended mandatory minimum sentence of twelve to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of early parole,” Richard explained, sliding a document folder across the desk. “Furthermore, our emergency divorce petition was officially filed and processed this morning under expedited emergency protocols. Given the documented history of physical abuse, the emergency room medical records you wisely preserved from Tuesday night, and the criminal indictment, Judge Callahan granted an immediate default dissolution of marriage, awarding you full custody of all marital assets, total ownership of this residence, and a comprehensive restraining order barring Ethan, Victoria, and Natalie from ever contacting you again.”

I opened the folder, running my left hand gently across the stamped court seal confirming the legal dissolution of my nightmare marriage.

The nightmare was officially over.
