Chapter 4 - The Knock on the Door

Three days after the wedding, Delaney and Hayes were luxuriating in their newly purchased, multi-million-dollar penthouse loft in downtown Chicago, presumably celebrating their flawless social media coup.
When the sharp, authoritative rat-a-tat-tat of police knuckles echoed against their custom mahogany double doors at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, they probably expected room service or a floral delivery celebrating their trending wedding hashtag.
Instead, when Hayes pulled the door open wearing a silk bathrobe and a smug grin, his smile instantly vanished.
Standing on the threshold were Detectives Vance and Miller, flanked by uniformed backup officers—and right behind them, wearing dark sunglasses to hide the bandage wrapped tightly around my forehead, stood me.
"Can I help you officers?" Hayes stammered, his color instantly draining from his face as he recognized the badges. "There must be some mistake. We just got back from our minimoon."
"Mr. Hayes Montgomery?" Detective Vance asked smoothly, stepping past him into the luxurious foyer without an invitation. "And Mrs. Delaney Montgomery?"
Delaney emerged from the kitchen holding a glass of iced lemon water, her face radiant with artificial warmth. "Oh, hello, officers! Is this about the wedding? If my sister filed a noise complaint or something ridiculous, I assure you—"
"Shut up, Delaney," Detective Vance commanded, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute, chilling authority.
I stepped into the foyer behind the officers, removing my sunglasses so they could see the stark white gauze pressing against my temple. Delaney gasped, her hand flying to her mouth, though whether out of shock or guilt was entirely up for debate.
"Delaney, Hayes," I said softly, my voice cutting through the silent apartment like a razor. "Did you really think you could rig a rusted fishhook into a tiara, crack open my skull on national video, and get away with it because you wanted to hide two million dollars in stolen trust funds?"
Hayes lunged forward, his face twisting with rage. "You psychotic bitch! You staged this! You ruined our wedding with your pathetic jealousy!"
"Mr. Montgomery, step back or I will drop you to this floor in cuffs right now," Detective Miller warned, resting his hand firmly on his service holster.
Detective Vance pulled two sets of gleaming steel handcuffs from his tactical belt and stepped directly in front of Delaney and Hayes.
"Delaney Montgomery, Hayes Montgomery," Detective Vance recited coldly, his words echoing off the high-end designer walls. "You are under arrest for felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal conspiracy, and witness tampering in an ongoing federal financial investigation. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the cold steel snapped around my sister’s delicate, manicured wrists, the pristine illusion of her perfect life shattered completely. She didn't cry for joy or play the victim for a camera; she shrieked in absolute terror, looking frantically around her empty, lifeless living room for a camera crew that wasn't there to save her.
As the officers led them out the front door in handcuffs, I paused on the threshold, adjusted my jacket, and watched the elevator doors close around them. The nightmare was finally over.
