Chapter 2 - The Digital Scramble and the Closing Net

For one agonizing, paralyzing second, the hospital room seemed to shrink inward, and Clara was back against that iron doorframe, smelling the damp dust of the basement while the hammer hovered in the air. Her breathing hitched, and a wave of dizziness washed over her.
Then, reality reasserted itself. She heard the reassuring squeak of rubber-soled shoes in the hallway, caught the distant chime of the nurses' station intercom, and remembered that this wasn't a locked cellar in Marcus’s suburban estate. This was a secure hospital floor with armed security guards, strict visitor protocols, and surveillance cameras tracking every inch of the corridors.
She wasn't alone anymore.
Clara straightened her shoulders, pushing the panic down into the earth. She looked straight at her sister with a cold, hardened gaze.
“Tell the front desk he does not come through that door,” Clara commanded.
Maya nodded sharply, instantly dialing the hospital’s main security desk on her own device, reporting an aggressive, violent stalker attempting to breach the maternity ward.
Outside in the hallway, heavy, hurried footsteps echoed against the linoleum floor. The unmistakable sound of someone marching with furious, entitled rage grew louder by the second. Marcus was here. He had driven straight from the house, his mind consumed not with remorse, but with the desperate urge to bully, threaten, and intimidate his way into erasing the proof of his brutality.
Click.
Someone grabbed the heavy brass handle of Clara’s room from the outside and violently rattled it.
“Open up!” Marcus’s muffled voice boomed through the reinforced wooden door, vibrating against the frame. “Clara! I know you’re in there! Open this damn door right now or you’ll regret it!”
Inside the room, Clara didn't flinch. She kept her eyes locked on the entryway.
The door handle spun wildly, but it held firm. Hospital policies and the quick call Maya had made to security had already triggered an automatic electronic deadbolt on the restricted maternity wing doors.
“Mr. Miller! Step away from the door immediately,” a firm security guard’s voice echoed from the hallway outside. “Put your hands behind your back or you will be physically restrained.”
“Get your hands off me!” Marcus roared back, his voice thick with unhinged entitlement. “Do you know who I am? That’s my wife in there! I have a right to speak to my family!”
“You have no right to be anywhere near this patient,” a second security voice countered sharply. “We are calling the local police department right now. Stay right where you are.”
Clara let out a long, shuddering breath as she listened to the muffled scuffle outside. Furniture scraped against the floor, followed by the heavy thud of a body being pushed against the hallway drywall. Marcus was fighting back, screaming threats about lawsuits, family honor, and police corruption—the exact tactics he had used for years to keep everyone around him terrified into submission.
But this time, the system didn't fold.
Within three minutes, the heavy exterior doors of the unit clicked again, followed by the crisp, authoritative jingle of standard-issue police utility belts.
“Officer, arrest him! Look at my husband, he’s just trying to check on his pregnant wife!” Eleanor’s shrill voice suddenly joined the chorus in the hallway.
Clara’s eyebrows shot up. Eleanor had come with him. Even while knowing what they had done, the older woman had driven down to the hospital, fully expecting to intimidate the nurses and gaslight the authorities just as she had done countless times in the past when neighbors or local shopkeepers threatened to expose their family’s dark underside.
“Ma’am, step back behind the yellow line or you will be cited for obstruction of justice,” a female police officer’s voice rang out clearly. “Marcus Miller, you are under arrest for domestic assault, aggravated battery, and intimidation of a witness. Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”
“This is a setup!” Marcus screamed, his voice cracking with panicked rage as metal cuffs clicked sharply into place. “My wife is crazy! She did this to herself! Let me go!”
His frantic shouting echoed down the corridor, slowly growing fainter as the officers dragged him toward the elevator bank, with Eleanor shrieking curses behind them.
Inside the room, the silence rushed back in like a cleansing wave.
Maya exhaled a massive breath she didn't realize she had been holding, letting her phone drop onto her lap. She looked across at Clara, a mix of awe and relief shining in her eyes.
“They got him,” Maya whispered.

Clara reached down, touched her healing, throbbing foot beneath the covers, and then rested her palm gently over her stomach. For the first time in years, the shadow of the hammer didn't feel heavy enough to crush her.
“Good,” Clara said, her voice steady and clear. “Let’s make sure they never let him out.”
