Six months later, the autumn air in the city was crisp, smelling of roasted chestnuts and damp asphalt.
I stood on the balcony of my new downtown loft, holding a mug of steaming black coffee and looking out over the glittering skyline. The city stretched out before me like an open map, full of possibility, light, and unbreakable boundaries.
The divorce had been finalized two weeks ago. Eric had moved back in with a distant cousin three towns over, taking Mark and Bruno with him. The house on Maple Street had been sold at auction to clear the lingering liens, and I had quietly bought back the original land parcel through a blind trust—not to live there, but to demolish the decaying structure and turn the lot into a community green space. A small monument to a bad chapter ending in the best possible way.
My phone chimed on the granite kitchen island. I walked inside, picking it up to check the notification.
It was an email from the senior partners at Apex Capital, confirming my promotion to Managing Director of Financial Strategy, complete with a six-figure base salary and a corner office overlooking the river.
