Chapter 3 - The General's Arrival

By 0530, the house was still dead silent. I had dressed carefully, wearing my crisp Class-A uniform with the polished brass buttons reflecting the overhead light. To conceal my mutilated scalp, I wore my official service cover—the peaked garrison hat pinned with the gleaming silver eagle of a full colonel—pulled down with absolute, regulation-compliant precision. No one looking at me from a distance would ever guess what lay beneath the wool band.
I walked downstairs into the kitchen. Ryan was sitting at the island, sipping a cup of black coffee while scrolling through his phone. Linda was standing by the stove, humming softly as she flipped pancakes.
When they heard my boots click against the hardwood floor, they both looked up.
Ryan’s eyes scanned my uniform, pausing briefly at the brim of my hat. A smug, condescending smile crept across his face. He expected tears. He expected me to be cowering in a hoodie, begging for mercy or scrambling to call the Army to resign.
“Well,” Ryan said, leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms. “Look who decided to play soldier again. Did you draft your resignation letter yet, Elena? Or do I need to help you find the phone number?”
Linda set the spatula down and walked over, wiping her hands on a floral dish towel. She looked at me with undisguised contempt. “You look ridiculous, walking around this house dressed like that after what happened last night. You need to learn your place, Elena. My son deserves a wife who stays home, not a commander who thinks she runs the world.”
I didn't blink. I didn't raise my voice. I walked slowly toward the front door, pausing just a few feet away from them.
“Ryan,” I said, my voice cutting through the kitchen like a razor. “Check your email.”
Ryan frowned, his phone already in his hand. “What are you talking about?”
“Just open your laptop,” I replied evenly. “Check your Contingency_Plan folder.”
The color drained from Ryan’s face instantly. He dropped his coffee mug; it shattered against the tile floor, splashing dark liquid across his slippers. He bolted from the stool, scrambling toward the office, while Linda shrieked, “Ryan! What is she talking about?”
Before Ryan could even reach the hallway, the heavy sound of vehicle engines idling outside echoed through the front windows.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
Heavy boots marched up our front porch steps. Before anyone could reach the door, three sharp, authoritative raps shook the frame.
Ryan stumbled back into the kitchen, his face completely white, trembling as if he had seen a ghost. “Elena... what did you do? What did you do?!”
I walked to the front door, unlocked the deadbolt, and pulled it wide open.
Standing on the porch under the gray morning sky was a sight that made Linda gasp and clutch her chest. It wasn't local police. It was a detachment of military police officers in full tactical gear, led by Brigadier General Thomas Vance—the head of Army Criminal Investigation Division, flanked by two senior JAG prosecutors.
General Vance looked past me into the foyer, his eyes locking onto Ryan, who was shaking like a leaf against the kitchen island.
“Colonel Hunt,” General Vance said, snapping a crisp, flawless salute in my direction.
I raised my right hand, returning the salute with absolute precision. “General Vance. Good morning, sir.”
“At ease, Colonel,” General Vance said, stepping across the threshold. He turned his piercing gaze toward Ryan and Linda. “Ryan O’Connor?”
Ryan’s knees buckled slightly. “I—I want a lawyer. I didn't do anything—”
“Mr. O’Connor,” General Vance interrupted, his voice echoing off the walls with terrifying authority, “you are being placed under federal arrest for wire fraud, embezzlement of protected spousal military assets, unauthorized possession of classified defense materials, and conspiracy to commit industrial espionage against a senior officer of the United States armed forces.”

Linda let out a blood-curdling scream and lunged toward the general. “You can’t do this! You don't know who we are! This is a mistake!”
Two military police officers stepped forward, gently but firmly pushing Linda back as handcuffs clicked onto Ryan’s wrists with a sharp, metallic snap.
