Chapter 2 - The Escalation

The temporary truce dissolved halfway through the main course when Maya’s future father-in-law, a retired corporate executive with booming confidence, leaned across the table to address me directly.

“So, Chris, how many years have you been in uniform?”

“Ten years, sir,” I replied evenly, cutting a piece of steak.

He raised his eyebrows in genuine respect. “A full decade. Impressive. Are you planning to make a career out of it, or looking toward retirement?”

Before I could formulate an answer, Maya leaned over her plate, her diamond engagement ring catching the ambient restaurant lighting. “Oh, he doesn’t plan anything, Arthur. That’s just not how Chris operates.”

I stopped chewing and looked directly across the table at my sister. Her smile was effortless, dripping with affectionate condescension.

“Chris just survives,” Maya continued, addressing the table at large. “That’s his core competency. Taking it one day at a time.”

Liam’s mother, a soft-spoken woman who had been quietly observing the dynamics of our family all evening, frowned slightly. “Ten years of dedicated service sounds like a very intentional plan to me.”

I offered her a grateful nod. “I appreciate that, ma’am.”

Maya let out another melodic, patronizing laugh. “Trust me, Helen. If you had watched him stumble through high school like we did, you wouldn't use the word intentional.”

“Maya,” Liam said.

The single word cut through the ambient noise of the private room with the suddenness of a gunshot. It wasn't shouted, but it carried an undeniable weight.

Maya blinked, startled. “What?”

Liam didn't answer her immediately. His eyes were fixed on me, dark and analytical. “What unit are you assigned to, Chris?”

Before I could speak, Maya waved a dismissive hand. “Oh, don't start interrogating him with military shop talk at our engagement dinner, Liam. It’s just local support stuff. Very safe, very routine.”

I almost smiled at the staggering irony of her words. I kept my voice entirely neutral. “Hunter.”

If you knew the organization, that single word was a blazing neon sign. It narrowed down your entire operational profile, your training pipeline, and your risk exposure instantly.

Maya, of course, heard nothing significant. “See?” she chirped. “Completely local. A desk job.”

Liam, however, stopped smiling entirely. The color in his face subtly shifted, and his posture straightened with an involuntary military snap. He knew the terminology. He knew what "Hunter" meant in the context of army aviation units operating out of Fort Stewart. But before he could process the implications, my father raised his glass to command the room's attention, launching into a toast to the happy couple, and the dangerous current beneath the surface was temporarily buried under polite applause and clinking crystal.
