Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the Study

Back in the Denver residence, the evening shadows lengthened across the hardwood floors as the grandfather clock downstairs chimed eight times.
Down in the spacious, book-lined study, Beatriz and Alvin sat shoulder-to-shoulder behind my heavy mahogany executive desk. Spread out before them were dozens of legal documents, bank routing numbers, and forged power-of-attorney affidavits waiting for final execution.
"Once the Aspen sale clears on Friday morning, the liquidity will hit our Cayman accounts by noon," Alvin whispered, leaning across the desk to plant a familiar, brazen kiss on Beatriz’s cheek. "We'll finally be free of this mortgage, free of the old man's medical bills, and free to start our new life together in Europe."
Beatriz smiled, swirling a glass of expensive cabernet sauvignon. "And once Dr. Mena finishes his work on Thursday night, we won't even have to worry about nursing home upkeep costs. Everything will legally revert to my sole survivorship estate."
They laughed softly—a cold, parasitic sound that echoed off the leather-bound book spines lining the walls.
Suddenly, the heavy front entrance door downstairs flew open with a tremendous, deafening bang that shook the entire foyer. Heavy, hurried footsteps pounded across the marble tiles and raced up the grand staircase.
Alvin froze, his wine glass halting midway to his mouth. "Who the hell is that?"
Before Beatriz could answer, the study door swung violently wide open.
Standing in the doorway, breathing heavily with her eyes blazing with fury and unshed tears, stood Lucy.
She looked like an avenging angel, her fists clenched tightly at her sides as she stared across the room at the two people who had plotted to destroy our family.
"Lucy?" Beatriz gasped, quickly standing up from the executive chair and attempting to slap on a mask of warm, motherly concern. "Sweetheart, what are you doing here this late? Is everything alright with your classes?"
"Don't you dare call me sweetheart," Lucy’s voice cut through the room like a razor-sharp blade, trembling with a mixture of raw grief and uncontrollable rage.
Alvin stood up slowly, trying to maintain his arrogant facade. "Now listen here, young lady, you can't just barge into—"
"Shut up, Alvin," Lucy snapped, her voice carrying an authority that instantly silenced him. She reached into her leather backpack and slammed a heavy, black electronic hard drive down onto the center of the desk, right on top of the fraudulent property deeds.
Alvin’s face drained of color. His eyes bulged as he stared at the device. "Where... where did you get that?"
"I went straight to my father's home office wall safe using the code he gave me," Lucy said, stepping forward into the room, her voice dropping into an icy register. "And while I was in there, I didn't just find my grandfather's original will, which explicitly leaves the Aspen estate to me. I also found the financial ledger copies, the unauthorized corporate wire transfers you’ve been funneling into your secret offshore accounts for the last eighteen months, and audio recordings of your conversations with Dr. Mena."
Beatriz staggered backward, her hip striking the edge of the bookshelf. Panic flashed wildly across her face. "That’s... that’s completely fabricated! She’s lying! She’s having a nervous breakdown over her father’s medical condition!"
"Am I?" Lucy challenged, pulling her smartphone from her coat pocket. With a tap of her thumb, she pressed play on the screen.
The clear, unmistakable audio of Beatriz’s voice filled the quiet study:
“Finish what you started. I want to be a widow before Friday.”
The room plunged into a suffocating, absolute silence. The trap had snapped shut, and there was no way out.
Alvin lunged forward like a cornered animal, reaching across the desk to snatch the hard drive off the wood. "Give me that!"

Before his fingers could graze the device, the study doors flew open wide once again.
This time, it wasn't just security. Four uniformed Denver police officers, led by Detective Miller and accompanied by Dr. Gabriel Mena wearing a federal wire vest, swarmed into the room with badges raised high.
