Chapter 3 - The Shadow Over Dry Hollow

For the next two months, life on the Voss ranch settled into an unexpected, grounding rhythm. Nora set up a small consultation room in the back of the ranch house, utilizing a desk, medical texts shipped from Philadelphia, and a pristine set of surgical tools. Word spread slowly at first, as small towns tend to treat anything unfamiliar with guarded suspicion. But when Nora successfully set a compound fracture for the blacksmith's son after he fell from a loft—a setting the local apothecary had declared would require amputation—the town's attitude shifted overnight.

Men who had eyed her suspiciously on Main Street now nodded respectfully when she walked by. Women brought her fresh baked bread and herbal teas, asking medical questions they had long suffered in silence.

Cale watched all of this with a quiet, brooding intensity. He was a man of few words, but Nora began to notice the small, thoughtful things he did: a freshly sharpened scalpel blade left on her desk, a newly built wooden cabinet for her medical supplies, and the way his dark eyes followed her around the kitchen table with an unreadable depth.

Yet, life in Dry Hollow was never truly peaceful. As the county deputy, Cale was locked in a bitter, silent war with Vance Keller, a ruthless land speculator and rustler who had been buying up surrounding ranches through intimidation, debt traps, and hired guns. Keller wanted Cale's land—not just for the cattle, but because the property sat directly over a natural water basin essential for controlling the valley's livestock routes.

One evening, while Cale was out repairing a perimeter fence line that had been deliberately sabotaged, Nora sat at her desk reviewing medical journals by the light of a kerosene lamp. A frantic pounding on the front door shattered the quiet.

She opened it to find a young ranch hand named Billy, bleeding heavily from a knife wound to his shoulder, gasping for breath. "Dr. Hallett... they ambushed us at the south ridge. Mr. Voss... they cornered him!"

Nora didn't hesitate. She grabbed her medical bag, saddled her mare, and rode hard toward the south ridge with Billy guiding the way. When she arrived, Cale had already fought off two of Keller's thugs, leaving them unconscious in the dust, but not before taking a glancing blow to his ribs and a deep laceration across his forearm.

When she hopped down from her horse and began stitching his arm right there under the moonlight, Cale looked down at her with a mix of awe and fierce protectiveness.

"I told you to stay at the house," he growled, though his voice lacked any real bite.

"And I told you I am a doctor," Nora snapped back, tightening a knot with surgical precision. "Which means I go where the patients are. And right now, my most stubborn patient is bleeding all over his favorite shirt."

Cale had let out a low, gravelly laugh—the first real, unrestrained laugh she had ever heard from him—and for the first time, the invisible wall between them crumbled entirely. They weren't just a mail-order bride and a lonely rancher playing a practical game; they were partners standing shoulder-to-shoulder against a rising tide of violence.
