Chapter 4 - The Countdown on National Television

Back in the grand ballroom, the cameras were rolling live.

A nationwide financial news network was broadcasting the grand event under the banner: THE BENNETT DYNASTY: CELEBRATING THE NEXT GENERATION. Anchors in Manhattan studios were smiling into their microphones, praising Grant’s business acumen and talking about how the Bennett family was cementing its legacy in American capitalism.

Grant stepped up to the microphone on the central stage, his arm draped casually around Sloane’s waist once more as if my arrival had been nothing more than a minor domestic hiccup that he had already dismissed.

"Before we make the official reveal," Grant announced into the microphone, his voice smooth, practiced, and dripping with charismatic arrogance, "I want to thank everyone for being here. Especially my incredible partner in all things—Sloane Mercer, whose vision has transformed our corporate brand this year."

A polite ripple of applause echoed through the room. Several board members nodded in approval, completely desensitized to Grant’s public boundary-pushing.

Evelyn turned to me with a sharp, triumphant smile, whispering, "You see, Claire? A wise wife learns when to look away. Grant is building an empire. You should feel honored just to stand in his shadow."

I didn't answer her. I kept my eyes fixed entirely on Grant as he walked down the steps of the stage toward the giant velvet-wrapped box.

"And now," Grant said, flashing a blinding, camera-ready smile as he grabbed the thick gold ribbon hanging from the top of the box. "Let’s find out if Bennett Meridian Capital has a future king."

The crowd counted down in unison.

“Ten... nine... eight...”

Grant looked directly at me across the open space between us, his pale blue eyes flashing with a silent, sadistic challenge. He wanted me to squirm. He wanted me to watch him crown his mistress before the entire world.

“Three... two... one... PULL!”

With a theatrical flair, Grant yanked the gold ribbon downward.

The velvet box split open.

There was no pink smoke. There was no blue confetti. There were no balloons floating toward the glass ceiling.

Instead, the internal digital screen inside the box snapped to life with a blinding, high-definition glow, projecting a massive, crystal-clear image directly onto the sixty-inch display screen mounted above the stage.

It wasn't a baby scan.

It was the 8x10 glossy photograph of Grant and Sloane walking out of the Lowell Hotel suite on October 11, complete with timestamp, hotel letterhead, and credit card authorization numbers.

And right beneath it, in bold, unyielding legal font, the text of the New York State Supreme Court asset freeze order began to scroll across the screen in real-time.

EMERGENCY ASSET FREEZE: BENNETT MERIDIAN CAPITAL & ASSOCIATED HOLDINGS.

FROZEN ASSETS: $42,500,000.

DEFENDANT: GRANT BENNETT.

REASON: FRAUDULENT CONVEYANCE, EMBEZZLEMENT OF MARITAL ESTATE, AND CORPORATE MALFEASANCE.

The entire ballroom went instantly, terrifyingly dead silent.

The violinist standing beside the hydrangea wall stopped playing mid-note. The waiters carrying champagne trays froze in place. The live television cameras, programmed to broadcast a wholesome family celebration, zoomed in directly on the glowing financial indictment and the crystal-clear photo of Grant kissing his mistress.

In the Manhattan broadcast studio, the live anchors stammered into their microphones, completely losing their script.

Grant stood frozen by the box, his hand still clutching the gold ribbon, his face turning the color of ash.

Sloane let out a sharp, panicked gasp, stumbling backward off the edge of the stage and tripping over her expensive champagne silk hemline.

For three full seconds, nobody moved.

Then, I stepped forward.

May you like

My heels clicked rhythmically against the marble floor as I walked slowly toward the stage, my emerald maternity dress catching the light of the crystal chandelier. I stopped right beside Grant, looked up at the massive screen projecting his corporate ruin, and then turned to face the stunned, silent crowd.

"Thank you all for coming to the celebration," I said, my voice carrying crystal-clear across every microphone in the room. "As you can see... the Bennett family has just experienced a major liquidation."
