Chapter 5 - A New Command

Six months later, the spring sun over Chicago was warm, bright, and full of promise.
Apex Logistics Software had been completely rebranded as Vance Global Technology, with a newly appointed board of directors, a clean balance sheet, and a renewed commitment to ethical innovation. As the executive chairman and majority controlling owner, I spent three mornings a week in the top-floor corner office—not hiding in the shadows anymore, but leading from the front, exactly where I belonged.
It was a Saturday afternoon.
Sophie and Daniel were out in the backyard, laughing as they tossed a baseball back and forth with Marcus Thorne, who had become a trusted family friend and legal advisor.
I stood on the second-story balcony of our home, holding a cup of steaming black coffee, looking out over the sprawling lawn and the blue sky beyond.
My phone buzzed on the patio table.
I picked it up. It was an email notification from my financial portfolio manager, detailing the quarterly revenue distribution. The numbers were staggering—millions of dollars flowing smoothly through a secure, well-managed enterprise that I now fully commanded.
A quiet, genuine smile touched my lips.
David had wanted a fifty-fifty split. He had wanted to nickel-and-fime the woman who had sacrificed her military career, her youth, and her peace of mind to build his empire. He had thought he could reduce me to a liability, a dependent, a second-class partner in our own home.
Instead, he had woken a sleeping giant.
I took a slow sip of my coffee, feeling the profound, unshakeable strength in my bones. I didn't need to ask anyone for permission anymore. I didn't need to shrink myself to fit someone else's ego.
