Chapter 3 - The Notice of Eviction and Asset Seizure

The sheriff's deputy stepped forward, pulling a multi-page legal document from his tactical belt and holding it out toward Bruno. The crisp, official rustle of paper seemed deafening in the suddenly silent hospital room.
"Bruno Sterling, Amber Sterling, and Indigo Sterling," the deputy read aloud in a firm, authoritative tone. "You are hereby served with an emergency civil asset freeze, a mandatory eviction notice for the property located at 4428 Oakridge Estates, and a temporary restraining order prohibiting any contact, direct or indirect, with Jade Sterling."
Amber gasped, her hands flying up to cover her mouth as if she had been physically struck. "Eviction? What are you talking about?! That’s our house! We picked out the crown molding! We host our charity galas there! That’s the Sterling family estate!"
"Actually, Mrs. Sterling," Sarah countered smoothly, opening a sleek leather portfolio and extracting a certified property deed, "the house at Oakridge Estates was purchased entirely using pre-marital capital and an individual equity line drawn from Jade's personal inheritance trust. Your names were never on the primary title deed. You were merely registered as permissive occupants at Jade’s gracious discretion—a discretion that has officially been revoked as of two minutes ago."
Bruno spun around to face me, his face turning a furious shade of crimson, all pretense of corporate composure completely shattering. His eyes bulged with raw panic and disbelief. "Jade! Are you insane?! You locked our accounts? You’re kicking my parents out of the house?! Have you lost your mind? We are married! Everything I have is mine, and everything you have belongs to our household!"
"Not anymore, Bruno," I said softly, looking him dead in the eye. "Ten years ago, I brought my career, my savings, and my heart into this marriage. In return, your family treated me like an unpaid servant, and last night, you stood by and watched them try to beat me to death over money that never belonged to you in the first place. The marriage ended the moment your mother raised her hand against me and you called it a 'good reason'."
Indigo stepped forward, his face purple with rage, pointing a trembling finger right in my face. "You ungrateful little witch! We made you! Without our son, you’d be nobody! You can't just throw us out on the street! We have social standing! We have a real estate project launching next week that requires that capital!"

"Your real estate project is about to become a federal case," Sarah interjected, stepping protectively in front of my bed. "In the process of auditing the accounts this morning, my forensic team uncovered a few interesting details. Shall we discuss the shell companies you set up using diverted funds from Bruno's corporate division, Indigo? Or should we wait for the federal investigators to arrive at your office?"
The color drained entirely from Indigo’s face. He stumbled backward, his knees buckling slightly as he bumped against the visitor's chair. Amber grabbed her husband’s arm, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror. They realized, with horrifying suddenness, that they hadn't just lost a battle of wills—they had walked straight into an airtight legal cage from which there was no escape.
