Chapter 3 - THE MOTHER THEY PUT ON PAPER
By morning, Laura’s photograph had appeared across social media.
She stood beside Nathan in the hospital room while holding Oliver. Beneath the image was a carefully written statement claiming Laura had carried the baby as a surrogate after Evelyn was unable to conceive.
The statement said Evelyn had withdrawn emotionally during the pregnancy and had now refused to acknowledge the child.
Nathan had launched his countermove.
He was turning Evelyn into the villain before she could expose him.
Reporters gathered outside Carter Biomedical. Board members demanded an emergency meeting. Investors called for Nathan to assume temporary control until Evelyn’s “medical situation” could be evaluated.
At ten o’clock, Nathan called.
“You could have handled this privately,” he said.
“You published a lie about a newborn.”
“I protected him from your reaction.”
“You and Laura are his biological parents.”
“That is not what the documents say.”
“The documents are forged.”
“Prove it.”
Evelyn activated the recorder on Margaret’s desk.
“You paid my doctor to create the psychiatric evaluation.”
“I paid him to document what everyone around you already knew.”
“You also backdated the surrogacy agreement.”
Nathan paused.
“You signed what I gave you.”
“At the fertility clinic, while I was sedated?”
“You trusted your husband. That is not fraud.”
His calmness disappeared as soon as Evelyn mentioned her father’s emergency clause.
“What clause?”
“The one that removes every right you have if you used coercion to obtain my shares.”
Nathan became silent.
Then he laughed.
“Your father died before updating half his estate documents. Whatever you found will not survive a court challenge.”
“You sound worried.”
“I’m warning you. If you fight me, I release the medical records. By tomorrow, no judge will trust you with a company, a trust or a child.”
The call ended.
Margaret saved the recording.
“He admitted he gave you documents while you were medically impaired,” she said. “That supports coercion.”
They still needed proof that the surrogacy agreement was false.
The fertility clinic initially refused to cooperate. Then federal investigators served a preservation order preventing the destruction of records.
The clinic’s laboratory data showed no embryo had ever been transferred to Laura.
A private DNA test, authorized by Laura during her prenatal care, identified Nathan as the biological father and Laura as the biological mother.
There was no surrogacy.
There was only an affair hidden behind forged paperwork.
The physician who signed Evelyn’s psychiatric evaluation attempted to resign that afternoon. Before leaving, he deleted patient files from his office computer.
The files had already been copied to the clinic’s backup server.
They included payments from one of Nathan’s consulting companies and a message from Laura:
Once Evelyn is declared incapable, Nathan controls the shares. Then Oliver gets the life he deserves.
Evelyn read the message three times.
Laura had not been manipulated into helping Nathan.
Her sister understood the plan.
At the emergency board meeting, Nathan entered with two attorneys and demanded that Evelyn be suspended.
He placed the psychiatric evaluation on the table.
Evelyn placed the DNA results beside it.
Nathan stopped smiling.
“The surrogacy agreement is fraudulent,” Margaret said. “The doctor who signed it is now cooperating with federal investigators.”
Laura, who had joined the meeting by video from the hospital, looked toward Nathan.
“You said the clinic destroyed those records.”
The room went silent.
Nathan turned toward the screen.
“Stop talking.”
Laura’s expression changed as she realized every director had heard her.
Margaret opened the original trust.
“The fraud-protection clause is now active. Nathan’s voting authority is revoked, his accounts connected to the company are frozen and every transaction he approved is subject to forensic review.”
Nathan rose so quickly that his chair struck the wall.
“You cannot remove me based on accusations from a jealous woman.”
Evelyn looked directly at him.
“You made me the intended mother on paper because you thought my name would protect your child and your theft.”
