Chapter 5 - The King’s True Throne

Three days later, the morning sun finally broke through the heavy grey clouds over Chicago, casting a warm, golden glow across the skyline and flooding the private recovery suite of Lakeshore Community Hospital with brilliant light.
Hannah sat propped up against a mountain of plush white pillows, wearing a soft cream-colored cardigan, looking down with a tender, radiant smile at the tiny bundle resting peacefully in her arms.
The door clicked open softly.
Dominic walked in. He had changed into a fresh, impeccably tailored navy-blue suit, his dark hair neatly combed, carrying a large bouquet of fresh white lilies and a small, elegant velvet box in his breast pocket.
He walked over to the side of the bed, gently leaning down to press a warm, lingering kiss to Hannah’s forehead, before lightly brushing his knuckles against the baby’s soft cheek.
“How are my two favorite people doing this morning?” he asked, his deep voice carrying a gentle warmth that only Hannah was privileged to hear.
“We’re doing wonderfully,” Hannah smiled, looking up at him with eyes full of adoration and complete peace. “Though the pediatrician says we’re cleared to go home tomorrow. Which means you need to figure out what you’re going to do with the little army of armed guards currently stationed outside our door.”
Dominic chuckled softly, pulling up a chair beside the bed and sitting down, taking her hand in his.
“They aren't an army, Hannah. They’re just... highly proactive babysitters,” he teased dryly. Then, his expression shifted, turning deeply serious as he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the small velvet box.
Hannah’s breath hitched slightly. “Dominic... what is this?”
Dominic placed the box on the edge of the blanket and flipped open the lid. Inside rested a breathtaking, custom-designed platinum ring featuring a rare, flawless Ceylon blue sapphire surrounded by a brilliant halo of diamonds—stunning, powerful, and entirely unique.
“When you walked out of my life eight months ago,” Dominic began, his voice dropping into a raw, husky register, “I thought I was protecting you by keeping you inside a fortress of money, power, and secrets. I was a fool. I built an empire of glass and steel, but I was living in a wasteland because I didn't have the courage to tell you the only truth that actually mattered.”
Hannah’s eyes swam with happy tears as she squeezed his hand.
“I love you, Hannah Reed,” Dominic said, looking directly into her eyes with an intensity that laid his entire soul bare. “More than my power, more than my empire, and more than my own life. You and this little boy... you are my real kingdom. Will you marry me, and let me spend the rest of my life proving that you never have to be afraid again?”
Hannah didn't hesitate for a single second.
“Yes,” she whispered, her voice breaking with emotion. “Yes, a million times yes.”
Dominic slid the stunning sapphire ring onto her left ring finger, sealing it with a deep, passionate kiss that tasted of forever.
In the crook of her arms, the baby let out a tiny, contented sigh, shifting slightly against his mother’s chest.
