Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup
At 8:30 AM, the executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Harrington Tower was a pressure cooker on the verge of exploding.
Twelve members of the board of directors—wealthy venture capitalists, influential institutional investors, and seasoned corporate attorneys—sat around the massive black granite conference table, shouting over one another in a chaotic panic.
“The servers are completely locked!” shouted Arthur Pendelton, the senior board member. “Every single international shipping route has been halted! If we don't get the master decryption keys in the next thirty minutes, our stock will plummet by eighty percent!”
The heavy glass double doors of the boardroom swung open with a sharp, echoing snap.
All shouting ceased instantly.
Every head turned toward the entrance.
Naomi Brooks Harrington walked into the room. She was wearing a tailored charcoal-grey Prada pantsuit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless ponytail, and a pair of designer sunglasses resting on the bridge of her nose. She didn't look like a heartbroken wife seeking solace; she looked like an apex predator stepping into an enclosure of tame wolves.
Behind her walked two federal compliance officers and her personal legal counsel, carrying heavy leather briefcases.
Arthur stood up from his chair, his face flushed with a mixture of outrage and desperation. “What is the meaning of this? Who let her in here? Security, remove this woman immediately! We are in the middle of an emergency board session—”
“Sit down, Arthur,” Naomi said.
Her voice was cool, level, and utterly devoid of emotion. She walked straight to the head of the table—the seat Ethan had occupied for a decade—and calmly pulled out the high-backed leather chair.
“I am speaking as the majority shareholder, sole patent holder, and newly appointed interim CEO of Harrington Global,” Naomi announced, resting her palms flat against the granite table.
A collective gasp rippled through the room.
“That’s absurd!” shouted another board member. “Ethan Harrington is the founder and CEO! You can’t just stage a corporate coup without a shareholder vote—”
“Ethan Harrington was terminated for gross financial malfeasance, corporate fraud, and embezzlement at 12:14 AM last night,” Naomi interrupted, sliding a certified forensic audit report across the table toward Arthur. “Feel free to review the documentation. Every unauthorized wire transfer, every offshore shell company, and every luxury purchase funded by corporate assets has been cataloged and reported to the Securities and Exchange Commission.”
Arthur snatched up the folder, his eyes scanning the first few pages. As the numbers registered in his mind, the color drained entirely from his face.
“My God,” Arthur whispered, looking up at Naomi in sheer horror. “He... he was bleeding the company dry.”
“He was,” Naomi confirmed calmly. “And because this board was either too incompetent or too complicit to notice, you are all legally implicated in his corporate governance failure.”
The room fell into a tomb-like silence. The high-powered executives who had spent years treating Naomi like a quiet wallflower at charity galas suddenly realized they were sitting across from the executioner.
“Now,” Naomi said, folding her hands neatly on the table. “We have two choices. Option one: You vote unanimously right now to ratify my restructuring plan, hand over complete operational control to my transition team, and allow us to stabilize the stock before the market opens fully. Option two: I liquidate the foundational patents, shut down the global servers permanently, and let federal marshals auction off the corporate remnants piece by piece by noon.”
Arthur looked around the table. Not a single board member met his eye. Every single one of them nodded in terrified, silent submission.

Naomi gave a single, curt nod. “Good. Meeting adjourned. Get to work.”
