Chapter 3 - The Legal Trap

The conference room at Aldridge & Sterling Law Firm smelled of aged leather, polished mahogany, and expensive coffee. Julian Aldridge sat across the gleaming glass table from me, wearing a sharp charcoal suit and an expression of grim disbelief as he watched the security footage loop for the third time on his tablet.

When the video finally ended, Julian set the tablet down slowly, steepled his fingers, and looked at me with a mixture of profound sympathy and cold professional respect.

"Well, Margaret," Julian said quietly. "This isn't just a family dispute. This is textbook criminal trespass, malicious destruction of property, and depending on how aggressive we want to be with the local district attorney, physical assault during a nocturnal invasion of privacy."

I folded my hands neatly on the table. "I don't necessarily want to send my son to prison, Julian. But I want them out of my house immediately. I want every single trace of their existence removed from my property, and I want to make sure they have zero legal standing to ever challenge me again."

Julian smiled—a tight, predatory curve of his lips that reminded me why Richard had trusted him with everything.

"Leave that entirely to me," Julian said, pulling out a thick leather folder. "First, let's look at the deed. The house is registered one hundred percent in your name, acquired prior to your marriage and maintained solely through your personal inheritance and insurance payouts. Daniel has zero equity claim. Second, they are classified legally as permissive guests, not formal tenants, since no lease was ever signed and no rent was ever paid."

He slid a stack of formal legal documents across the table toward me.

"This," Julian explained, tapping the top paper, "is a formal Notice to Quit and Vacate Premises, giving them precisely forty-eight hours to remove all personal belongings and surrender possession of the property. Because of the security footage documenting malicious property damage and hostile intimidation, we can also file an immediate restraining order preventing them from coming within five hundred feet of you or your residence."

I picked up the heavy black pen resting on the table. "And what happens if they refuse to leave?"

"If they refuse, the local sheriff will be at your doorstep on Friday morning with a writ of possession, and they will be physically escorted off the property in front of all their neighbors," Julian said calmly. "And if Vanessa tries to pull any legal gymnastics, we hand this video straight to the police department."

I signed my name at the bottom of the document with crisp, unwavering strokes.

"Execute it all," I said.
