Chapter 4 - The Trap is Set

Over the next three weeks, the top floor of the Vale Tower became a war room.

Natalie Reeves didn't go home. She moved into a temporary office adjacent to Elliot’s executive suite, fueled by black coffee, fierce determination, and an unprecedented level of corporate authority. Elliot had given her a blank check and absolute executive clearance: Fix the company. Expose the rot.

Working alongside a team of forensic accountants brought in secretly by Aunt Ruth, Natalie systematically dismantled Evan Vale’s corporate network piece by piece. They traced every fraudulent wire transfer, uncovered every forged land title, and mapped out the exact digital footprint of the conspiracy.

But Natalie knew that exposing white-collar criminals required more than just spreadsheets; it required presentation. In the corporate world, perception was reality. If they simply handed the police a folder of dry financial data, Evan’s high-priced defense attorneys would drag the litigation out for years.

They needed to trap him in broad daylight, in front of the entire Chicago business elite, using his own carefully constructed illusions against him.

And the weapon for that trap would be the Vale Centennial Gala.

On the night of the gala, the historic grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a masterpiece of breathtaking luxury. Hundreds of guests—city politicians, international investors, high-society socialites, and board members—mingled beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers, sipping champagne and admiring the stunning retrospective exhibits celebrating fifty years of Vale Holdings.

At the center of the ballroom stood a massive, illuminated digital display wall showcasing the history of the company, anchored by a prominent, high-resolution photographic tribute to the ancestral Berkshire estate.

Evan Vale stood near the VIP reception bar, looking immaculate in a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo, holding a glass of scotch and laughing smoothly with a group of municipal developers. He looked untouchable. He believed the financial audit was weeks away, that his mother was too frail to interfere, and that his cousin Elliot was completely blind to the liquidation of the estate.

Across the room, standing near the mahogany reception desk, Elliot watched Evan with a face carved from granite. He wore a dark suit, his tie—flawlessly tied with a clean, sharp dimple—crisp against his collar.

He looked across the room and caught Natalie’s eye.

Natalie stood near the media control console, dressed in a stunning, minimalist emerald-green gown that commanded the room without screaming for attention. She gave him a tiny, reassuring nod.

It was time.

The ballroom lights dimmed slightly. The soft murmur of conversation faded as the senior vice president of the board stepped up to the podium on the main stage to deliver the keynote address.

“Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests,” the executive began, projecting his voice across the room. “For fifty years, Vale Holdings has stood as a beacon of integrity, vision, and enduring legacy in the heart of Chicago. Tonight, as we celebrate our centennial, we look forward to the future—a future anchored by the eternal strength of our foundational properties, particularly our historic Berkshire estate.”

On the giant digital display wall behind the podium, the promotional video began to play. Historic black-and-white photographs of Arthur Vale dissolved into gorgeous, sweeping cinematic drone shots of the Berkshire mountains, culminating in a pristine, sunlit image of the ancestral estate.

It was the exact same promotional photograph Natalie had audited in the boardroom three weeks ago.

Evan Vale smiled smugly from the VIP section, raising his glass in a silent toast to his own apparent triumph.

Then, right in the middle of the keynote speech, the video stuttered.

The stunning drone footage flickered violently. The golden sunlight over the estate vanished, replaced by cold, harsh daylight. The pristine image of the historic mansion glitch-shifted, and a secondary, high-resolution architectural overlay appeared directly over the screen, displaying public land registry maps, GPS coordinate stamps, and notarized Cayman Islands shell corporation transfer documents.

A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom.

Whispers erupted among the guests. Flashbulbs from business journalists suddenly began firing furiously in the dark.

On the digital screen, the forged signature of Arthur Vale flashed in giant red letters, accompanied by a side-by-side comparison of the digital metadata proving it had been generated on Evan Vale’s personal laptop just two months prior.

Evan’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering loudly against the marble floor.

The color drained entirely from his face as he stared up at the giant screen in absolute horror. He whipped his head around, scanning the ballroom until his eyes locked onto the media control console.

Standing beside the console wasn't a technician.

It was Natalie Reeves.

And standing directly beside her, stepping out from the shadows into the spotlight, was Elliot Vale.
