Chapter 5 - The Clean Slate

Two months later, the legal storm had completely passed.

Grant’s corporate fraud case was moving steadily through the federal district court, complete with frozen assets, pending indictments, and a very public downfall that was currently being detailed in the local business journals. True to form, he had tried calling me twice from a burner phone, begging for financial assistance and legal clemency; both times, I hung up without saying a single word and forwarded the numbers straight to Marcus Vance.

As for Emma? Rumor had it she had packed her remaining belongings into a Greyhound bus and crawled back to her hometown in Illinois, moving back into her parents' basement under a cloud of deep humiliation and crushing debt.

I stood on the front steps of my house on a crisp, brilliant Saturday morning, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater and jeans, holding a steaming mug of black coffee.

The sun was shining brightly over Columbus, casting a warm, golden glow across the manicured lawn. The air smelled crisp, clean, and entirely free of deceit.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out, expecting a hospital administrative update. Instead, it was a notification from the rideshare app I hadn't opened since that fateful Tuesday morning at the hospital.

Your preferred driver, Malik, is available.

I looked at the screen, smiled softly, and deleted the app entirely from my phone. I didn't need rideshares anymore. I drove my own car, I walked my own path, and my life belonged entirely to me.

Taking a deep, refreshing breath of the morning air, I turned around and walked back inside my home—clean, peaceful, and wonderfully whole.
