Chapter 4 - The Legal Trap Springs

Within twenty minutes, Parker’s sleek black BMW was packed to the absolute roof with designer luggage, expensive coats, and weeping, humiliated relatives. Alana refused to even look out the window as Parker, sweating profusely and looking like a ghost of his former arrogant self, climbed into the driver's seat. Without uttering another word of defiance, Parker put the car in reverse, tires spitting gravel across the driveway, and sped down the road as fast as the engine could carry them, fleeing the scene of their total destruction.
Clarissa stood on the porch with Dustin wrapped safely in her arm, watching the tail lights disappear around the bend of the country road. The heavy burden she had carried for years felt like it had been lifted from her shoulders in a single afternoon. But the battle wasn't entirely over; corporate entanglements and divorce proceedings involving pre-marital assets required surgical legal execution.
Monday morning arrived with the crisp, professional energy of the city hospital where Clarissa worked. Instead of heading straight to her nursing shift, she met with Marcus Vance, one of the sharpest family and corporate estate attorneys in Chicago—a man known for dismantling hostile takeovers in both boardrooms and family courts.
Marcus sat behind his massive mahogany desk, reviewing the audio transcripts and property deeds Clarissa had laid out before him. A slow, appreciative grin spread across his face. “Clarissa, I have to hand it to you,” Marcus said, adjusting his glasses. “This audio file is an absolute masterpiece of self-incrimination. Not only does it prove premeditated fraud and conspiracy to misappropriate pre-marital assets, but combined with the doctor's notes on Dustin’s stress levels and the witness testimony from the country house incident, we have an airtight case for sole custody and an expedited asset freeze.”
“I want everything locked down, Marcus,” Clarissa said firmly, her tone leaving zero room for negotiation. “Parker’s new commercial logistics venture relies heavily on credit lines backed by family guarantees. If those guarantees are proven to be fraudulent or tied to coerced asset transfers, what happens to his business?”
“It collapses within seventy-two hours,” Marcus replied smoothly, spinning his fountain pen between his fingers. “Without his mother’s financial backing and without your pre-marital properties serving as silent collateral, no major bank in Illinois will touch him with a ten-foot pole. He will face immediate default on his startup loans.”

“Good,” Clarissa said without a shred of remorse. “Play hardball. I want a signed separation agreement on his desk by noon today, granting me 100% custody, permanent ownership of both the city condo and the country estate, and zero spousal support given his active participation in a fraud conspiracy.”
True to Marcus's word, by Monday afternoon, Parker found himself completely cornered. His business partners, realizing that Parker was facing potential criminal fraud charges and a ruined personal reputation, immediately voted to oust him as CEO of the logistics startup. His mother and sister, furious that their golden scheme had imploded, turned their toxic fury directly onto Parker, blaming him for being incompetent and destroying the family's social standing. By Wednesday evening, broken, broke, and utterly defeated, Parker signed every single document Marcus placed in front of him, surrendering all claims to Clarissa's properties and signing away custody rights just to avoid a public criminal trial. The legal trap had sprung with absolute, flawless precision.
