Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

Within forty-eight hours, the mighty Adrian Mercer was reduced to a ghost in his own kingdom.
The corporate headquarters of Mercer Logistics was swarmed by federal agents, auditors, and media crews. Headlines across Chicago blared the shocking downfall of the city's most feared logistics magnate. Analysts speculated about the mysterious whistleblower who had provided federal authorities with an airtight case on a silver platter.
Only Marcus Vance and Evelyn knew the truth.
Evelyn moved out of the penthouse and into a stunning penthouse suite overlooking Lake Michigan, purchased under her newly established independent holding company. She didn't look back once. The past seven years of fear, threats, and police raids felt like a distant, suffocating nightmare that she had finally woken up from.
One afternoon, as she sat on her balcony watching the waves crash against the shoreline, her doorbell rang.
She opened the door to find Celeste Monroe standing in the hallway. Gone was the high-fashion confidence and the designer clothes. Celeste looked pale, frantic, and desperate, wearing a simple oversized sweater with no makeup.
"Evelyn," Celeste breathed, her hands trembling. "Please. You have to help me."
Evelyn crossed her arms, leaning against the doorframe. "Help you? Celeste, I'm surprised you have the courage to show your face here after what happened at Bellweather."
"Adrian lied to me!" Celeste cried, tears spilling over her mascara. "He told me you two were separated! He told me the divorce was already finalized! He promised me that bracelet was just a parting gift because he was moving on! Now the federal investigators have seized all my bank accounts because they traced gifts bought with company funds back to me. They're investigating me as an accomplice!"
Evelyn watched her former friend with a detached sense of pity. There was no anger left inside her—only a profound sense of closure.
"Celeste, when you sleep with a married man and accept luxury gifts funded by illegal corporate schemes, you take a gamble," Evelyn said coldly. "You thought you were winning a prize by taking Adrian away from me. Turns out, you just inherited a sinking ship."
"Please, Evelyn! You have control of the restructured board now! You can tell the federal prosecutors that I didn't know anything about the illegal funds!" Celeste sobbed, stepping forward to grab Evelyn's hand.
Evelyn pulled her hand away, stepping back inside her doorway. "I don't lie for people of your character, Celeste. You made your bed with Adrian's diamonds. Now you get to sleep in it."
Before Celeste could beg further, Evelyn closed the door firmly, locking the deadbolt with a satisfying click.
Meanwhile, Adrian Mercer was sinking deeper into desperation. Stripped of his wealth, his company, and his social standing, he found himself abandoned by everyone who had once feared and respected him. His former associates refused to take his calls, knowing that associating with a federal target was corporate suicide.
Desperate for leverage, Adrian tried to track down Evelyn to force her into a private settlement. He waited outside her new building for hours in the freezing wind, watching for her town car.
When Evelyn finally stepped out of the lobby, wrapped in her cream wool coat, Adrian rushed across the sidewalk, blocking her path.
"Evelyn! Stop right there!" Adrian yelled, his face unshaven, his designer suit wrinkled and unkempt. "You can't do this to me! We were partners! I built this empire for us!"
Evelyn stopped, looking at the broken man standing before her. The arrogant king of Chicago was gone, replaced by a desperate, pathetic shadow of his former self.
"You built an empire on lies, Adrian," Evelyn said quietly, her voice entirely devoid of emotion. "And empires built on sand always collapse when the tide comes in."

"I'll fight you in court!" Adrian threatened, his voice cracking with rage. "I'll expose every dirty secret in this city before I let you walk away with everything!"
"Go ahead," Evelyn replied calmly, stepping past him. "Try explaining your secret offshore accounts to a federal judge while you're wearing an orange jumpsuit. See how far your threats get you then."
