Chapter 4 - The Sound of the Trap Closing

"Don't touch that, Dale," I said, my voice cutting through the heavy salon air like a razor blade.
Ashley stepped further inside, her face pale with confusion. "Wait... Miss C? Do you two... know each other?"
Dale swallowed hard, his throat bobbing as panic finally set in. He looked at me with eyes wide with sheer terror, realizing in a single fraction of a second that the sweet, unassuming wife he had manipulated for over two decades was an absolute stranger he had severely underestimated.
"She doesn't just know me, Ashley," I said calmly, stepping out from behind my styling chair. "I’m the woman who cuts your hair every Thursday at two o’clock. And more importantly—I’m the woman who has been married to this man for twenty-six years."
Ashley’s jaw dropped. She staggered backward a step, catching herself against the edge of the waiting area sofa. "No... no, that’s impossible. You’re... you’re Miss C!"
"And Miss C happens to be a licensed notary public," a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the back of the salon.
Patrice Moody stepped out from behind the curtain, holding her phone and a crisp legal document in her hand. She walked smoothly across the checkered tile floor, stepping right up beside my chair.
Dale flinched as if he had been physically struck. "Who the hell are you?" he stammered, glaring at Patrice.
"I am Carol’s divorce attorney, Mr. Harrison," Patrice replied smoothly, her smile sharp enough to draw blood. "And what you have brought into this salon today is not a routine legal notarization. It is a signed confession of asset concealment, corporate fraud, and deliberate forgery."
Dale spun around, looking desperately toward the locked front door, then back at Ashley, who looked like she was about to hyperventilate.
"Ashley," Dale stammered, stepping toward her. "Listen to me, baby, it’s not what you think—"
"Don't you dare touch her," I interrupted, my voice ringing with cold authority. I reached over, picked up the thick leather portfolio from my counter, and unzipped it. Inside sat neatly organized stacks of transfer agreements, equipment debt assignments, and corporate restructuring forms—all bearing my name, meticulously forged in Dale’s handwriting.
I looked straight into Dale’s terrified eyes. "You thought you were so clever, didn't you? You thought you could hide four hundred thousand dollars in a boat account, saddle me with your business debt, and throw me out like an old pair of shoes while you ran off with a girl who tells her hairdresser every single detail of your life."
Ashley stared at Dale, her expression shifting from shock to absolute disgust. "You lied to me," she whispered, her voice trembling. "You told me she was clueless. You told me she didn't know anything about the money!"
"She didn't!" Dale shouted defensively, panic finally breaking his composure. "She’s just a hairdresser!"
"And you are just a fool," Patrice interjected calmly, pulling a second set of documents from her briefcase. "Mr. Harrison, these papers you brought to be 'notarized' have already been reviewed by a court-appointed forensic accountant. As of ten minutes ago, a judge in Bibb County has signed an emergency injunction freezing every single corporate and personal account you own—including the offshore reserve and the boat fund at Lake Sinclair."
Dale staggered backward, his knees buckling slightly as he hit the waiting room chair. The realization washed over him like a tidal wave. His empire, his hidden money, his secret condo, and his carefully constructed escape plan had completely evaporated in less than five minutes.
"You can't do this," Dale whispered, staring up at me with pleading eyes. "Carol... twenty-six years. We built this together. We can talk about this at home."

I looked down at the man I had loved, sacrificed for, and trusted for more than half my life. I didn't feel rage anymore. I didn't feel heartbreak. I only felt a profound, liberating peace.
"There is no home left, Dale," I said quietly, sliding the folder across the counter into Patrice's waiting hands. "And as for your paperwork? I’m afraid my schedule is completely booked for the rest of the day."
