Chapter 4 - The Audit of Vengeance

By late afternoon, the executive conference room at Vance & Associates looked more like a war room than a law office. Whiteboards lining the walls were covered in complex flowcharts, bank routing numbers, asset liquidation timelines, and intercepted email chains between Daniel and Marlene.
Claire sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, nursing a cup of black coffee with her left hand while her right rested comfortably in its sling.
Rina walked in, tossing a thick dossier onto the table with a satisfying thud.
"Well, the preliminary financial audit is complete," Rina announced, pulling out a chair and sitting down. "And it is much, much worse than we initially thought."
Claire didn't look up from her coffee. "Give me the numbers."
"The twelve thousand dollars Marlene stole from your joint emergency fund was just the tip of the iceberg," Rina said, flipping open the file. "Over the past fourteen months, Daniel systematically funneled nearly eighty-five thousand dollars from your pre-marital investment dividends into shell accounts controlled by Marlene. They were planning to force a foreclosure on this condo, buy it out at a sheriff’s auction for pennies on the dollar using your own money, and leave you legally destitute."
Claire absorbed the information with chilling calm. There was no shock left in her system—only a cold, mathematical satisfaction.
"And their personal liquidity?" Claire asked.
"Frozen," Rina replied with a sharp smile. "Every joint account, every credit card, every vehicle registration, and every hidden investment portfolio under Daniel’s name has been slapped with a freezing injunction by Judge Henderson. Furthermore, because Daniel used his smartphone to record the assault rather than rendering aid, the district attorney has upgraded his charges from a misdemeanor compliance violation to a felony count of accessory to aggravated assault."
Rina leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table. "They are facing anywhere from three to seven years in federal and state penitentiaries, Claire. And financially? They are wiped out to the penny. Their legal defense fund consists of zero dollars because every cent they had was tied up in the assets we just seized."
Claire stood up slowly, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the bustling downtown skyline. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden, fiery glow over the city streets below.
"Good," Claire murmured softly. "Let them experience what it’s like to have nothing taken from them by people they trusted."
"So," Rina said, watching her partner closely. "What’s the next move? Do we settle out of court if they offer a full surrender, or do we crush them completely at trial?"
Claire turned around, her eyes flashing with a sharp, brilliant light.

"We don't settle with predators, Rina," Claire said firmly. "We take it all to trial, secure the maximum criminal conviction, and set a legal precedent that protects every single woman trapped in a predatory marriage."
Rina broke into a wide, approving grin. "Consider it done, counselor. Welcome back to the arena."
