Chapter 3 - The Confession on Tape

The tiny black rectangle of the digital recorder caught the pale afternoon sunlight, looking far more lethal than any weapon of war.

Bianca stopped dead in her tracks, her mouth parting in silent horror as she recognized the device. Ewald froze, his fingers loosening slightly around the stolen envelope of cash, while Lydia’s haughty expression dissolved into sheer, unadulterated panic.

Alexander looked from the recorder to his wife, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. “Bianca... what is that? What did she record?”

“Nothing!” Bianca shrieked, lunging frantically toward the coffee table in a desperate attempt to snatch the device out of my hands. “It’s a trick! She’s senile! She’s planting fake evidence to destroy our marriage!”

Before she could reach me, Alexander’s arm shot out like a steel bar, blocking her path with terrifying force. He didn't look at her; his eyes were locked onto my face as I calmly pressed the playback button on the recorder's sleek surface.

The built-in speaker hissed softly for a split second before the crisp, undeniable audio began to fill the quiet room.

“Just play along with the lunch, Ewald,” Bianca’s recorded voice rang out clearly, echoing off the expensive wallpaper. “Once the old woman arrives, we let her settle in for twenty minutes. Then you, Dad, bring up the retirement home suggestion. Really push her buttons about her poverty. Once Alexander feels guilty enough to hand over that twenty-five grand he’s been hoarding for her, I’ll throw a massive scene. I’ll make it look like she’s a greedy burden, and you two swoop in to take the cash. It’s foolproof.”

The voice on the tape didn't stop there. Ewald’s booming, arrogant laugh followed immediately after. “And if the old cleaner starts crying or making a fuss?”

“Who cares?” recorded-Bianca replied with a chilling, heartless laugh. “Alexander is too whipped to say a word against me. By tonight, the money is in our bank account, and she’ll be crying back in her tiny apartment with zero proof of our arrangement.”

The room plunged into an absolute abyss of heavy, suffocating silence.

Alexander stood frozen like a statue carved from ice. Every drop of color had drained completely from his face, leaving him looking hollowed out and utterly devastated. He slowly turned his head to look at his wife, who was now backed up against the dining cabinet, trembling violently as she realized the magnitude of her exposed treachery.

“You... you planned this?” Alexander whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, suppressed rage that made even Ewald take a cautious step backward. “You invited my mother here on Mother’s Day not to celebrate, but to execute a calculated robbery and humiliate her?”

“No, Alexander, listen to me!” Bianca wailed, her voice cracking as she tried to rush toward him with fake tears streaming down her cheeks. “It was out of love! For our future! Your mother doesn't need that money, but my parents have debts—!”

“Shut up,” Alexander hissed. It wasn't loud, but the sheer venom in his tone made Bianca flinch as if she had been physically struck. He turned his burning gaze toward his in-laws, pointing a rigid finger at the front door. “And you two. Get out of my house right this second, or I swear to God I will call the police and charge you both with grand larceny and extortion.”

Ewald’s face flushed a deep, ugly shade of crimson. Clutching the envelope tightly, he scoffed defensively. “You ungrateful little brat! We were just trying to help secure our family’s—!”

“Out!” Alexander roared, picking up a heavy porcelain vase and slamming it down onto the dining table, shattering the flowers inside.

Lydia grabbed her sputtering husband by the arm, and dragging a sobbing, humiliated Bianca behind them in a flurry of expensive fabric and desperate curses, the three conspirators fled through the front door, slamming it shut behind them with a resounding crash that shook the entire house.
