Chapter 4 - The Ultimatum in the Office

The silence that followed was heavier than any storm.
Adrian stared at me, the color slowly draining from his face as the timeline clicked into place in his mind. Three weeks. The Atlanta convention. Room 1841. The one night we had both sworn would remain an isolated incident, neatly boxed away and buried beneath spreadsheets and professional boundaries.
He stood up abruptly, pacing toward the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the Atlanta skyline, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides.
"Are you certain?" he asked, his back to me, his voice strained.
"I am a data analyst, Adrian," I replied, a bitter edge creeping into my tone. "I don't guess. I verify."
He turned back around, his jaw rigid, the formidable CEO back in control—or desperately trying to be. "We need a plan."
"A plan?" I let out a sharp, incredulous laugh, swinging my legs over the side of the sofa and standing up, despite my lingering dizziness. "Is that what you call it? What kind of corporate restructuring package are you going to draw up for this? A severance package? A relocation bonus to a remote branch office so nobody finds out?"
"Don't be absurd," he snapped, stepping toward me, closing the distance between us with long, purposeful strides. "I am not going to fire you, and I am certainly not going to hide this."
"You don't have a choice!" I fired back, my voice rising, the fear and frustration finally boiling over. "If the board finds out that the CEO knocked up a junior data analyst during a convention storm, my career is destroyed! People will say I manipulated you, that I trapped you for a promotion, that I traded my body to climb the corporate ladder! Every success I’ve earned through four years of brutal, exhausting work will be reduced to a scandal!"
"Let them talk," Adrian said fiercely, his hand shooting out to grab my wrist—not hard, but with a grip so steady and absolute it stopped me in my tracks. "Let them say whatever they want. I don't care about the board, and I don't care about office gossip."
"Well, I care!" I yelled, pulling my arm away from his grip, tears finally spilling hot and fast down my cheeks. "I care because my entire life has been about proving I belong in this room on my own merit! My mother raised me to never depend on a man, to never be the girl who gets caught in someone else's orbit. And now—now I'm tied to you. To the most powerful, controlling, overwhelming man in this entire city!"
Adrian went utterly silent. He watched me cry, his chest rising and falling heavily beneath his tailored suit jacket. The fierce, demanding CEO melted away, leaving only a man who realized that for all his billions of dollars and corporate empires, he had absolutely zero control over the person standing in front of him.
"You think I want to control you?" he asked quietly, stepping closer until I could feel the heat radiating off his body. "Paige... from the moment I woke up in that hotel room and watched you walk out without asking for a single thing, I haven't been able to think about anything else. I didn't plan this. You didn't plan this. But it happened."
He reached out, his thumb gently brushing a tear from my cheek with a tenderness that completely undone my defenses.
"We are going to face this together," he murmured. "No hiding. No corporate cover-ups. We build a life. On your terms."
May you like
I closed my eyes, trembling as his hand cupped my face. "It's too dangerous, Adrian. Someone will find out. People always find out."
"Let them," he whispered, pressing his forehead gently against mine. "Let them try."
