Chapter 4 - The Billionaire Steps Out of the Shadows

The entire lobby seemed to hold its breath. Vanessa Mercer immediately dropped her hostile demeanor, a sickeningly sweet smile stretching across her face as she practically sprinted toward the doors.
"Mr. Vance!" Vanessa practically cooed, bowing her head slightly. "Welcome to the Lakeshore Grand. We are incredibly honored by your presence. I am Vanessa Mercer, the General Manager, and I have prepared a full tour of our stunning facilities for you."
Julian Vance didn't look at her. He didn't even acknowledge her existence. His piercing gray eyes swept across the frozen staff, bypassing the senior management, ignoring the elaborate floral displays, until they landed squarely on Nia Carter.
He bypassed Vanessa completely, leaving the General Manager standing awkwardly with her hand outstretched. Julian walked across the marble floor, his polished shoes silent against the stone, until he stopped directly in front of Nia.
The harshness in his eyes instantly melted away, replaced by a warm, profound respect. "Miss Carter," Julian said, his baritone voice echoing in the dead silent lobby. "You are exactly on time. I’m glad you came."
Nia’s mouth opened, but no words came out. She looked at his designer suit, the expensive watch on his wrist, and the subtle bandage on his temple. "You... you're Julian," she whispered, her brain struggling to connect the helpless, shivering man in the torn coat with the billionaire titan standing before her.
"I am," Julian smiled gently. "Though I believe I owe you an apology for not fully introducing myself on Tuesday. I was a bit... distracted."
Behind them, Vanessa Mercer was turning a dangerous shade of pale. "Mr... Mr. Vance?" she stammered, rushing over, her voice trembling. "I don't understand. Do you know this woman? She is a disgruntled former employee. She was terminated for gross insubordination and—"
"I know exactly why she was terminated, Vanessa," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave, slicing through the air like a blade. He slowly turned to face the General Manager, and the warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by an icy, terrifying fury. "She was terminated because she stopped to save my life."
A collective gasp echoed through the lobby. The front desk clerks stared in horror; the bellhops stood paralyzed.
Vanessa stumbled backward as if she had been physically struck. "Your... your life? That was... that was you?" Her eyes darted wildly, trying to process the catastrophic reality of the situation. "Mr. Vance, I... I had no idea! She didn't tell me it was you! If I had known it was you, I would have—"
"You would have what?" Julian interrupted, stepping forward, his sheer presence forcing Vanessa to cower. "You would have treated me with dignity? You would have offered me medical assistance? Is basic human compassion reserved only for billionaires in your hotel, Vanessa?"
"No! No, of course not! It was a misunderstanding!" Vanessa pleaded, her pristine image shattering into a million desperate pieces. "She was late! I have strict policies to maintain excellence!"
"Excellence?" Julian scoffed, signaling to one of the suited men behind him. The man stepped forward, handing Julian a thick black leather folder. Julian flipped it open. "Let’s talk about your excellence, Vanessa. While I was in the hospital, recovering from a concussion, I had my personal forensic accounting team do a deep dive into the Lakeshore Grand’s ledgers."
Vanessa let out a strangled squeak, all the color draining from her face.
"I know about the phantom employees you created to pocket salaries," Julian read from the file, his voice echoing loudly so every staff member could hear. "I know about the mandatory service charges you stole from the banquet staff. I know that you cut the heating budget in the employee areas to secure your own end-of-year bonus. You haven't been managing a hotel, Vanessa. You’ve been running a dictatorship funded by embezzlement."
"It's a lie!" Vanessa shrieked, tears of panic streaming down her face. "They set me up! I have given my life to this hotel!"
"You’ve leeched the life out of this hotel," Julian corrected coldly. He snapped the folder shut. "You are fired, Ms. Mercer. Effective immediately. Furthermore, the authorities have already been provided with these documents. I believe the police are waiting for you at the employee exit. The same exit you tried to throw me out of."
Two heavy-set bodyguards stepped forward, flanking the sobbing, ruined General Manager. Vanessa looked around wildly for sympathy, but the staff—people she had terrorized for years—only watched with quiet, immensely satisfying vindication.
"Get her out of my sight," Julian commanded.

Vanessa was escorted away, weeping loudly, her career and freedom entirely destroyed in the span of three minutes. The lobby remained dead silent, the heavy weight of justice settling over the room.
Julian took a deep breath, adjusting his cuffs, and turned back to Nia. The cold billionaire vanished, and the gentle man from the laundry room returned. "Now," he said, offering his arm to Nia. "I believe we have some business to discuss, Miss Carter. Shall we go to my office?"
