Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

The forty-second-floor executive boardroom of Rourke Shipping was designed to intimidate. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the storm-swept Providence harbor, while a massive, twenty-foot mahogany conference table dominated the center of the room.

At precisely 9:00 AM on Wednesday, the twelve members of the board of directors sat in hushed, nervous silence.

Julian Rourke stood at the head of the table, wearing a bespoke charcoal suit, tapping a gold fountain pen against the polished wood. Spread out before each director was a thick legal packet containing the emergency power-of-attorney transfer.

"Gentlemen," Julian began, projecting an air of solemn, sorrowful leadership. "We all know my cousin Maxwell’s tragic condition. His health is failing rapidly. For the stability of Rourke Shipping, we must authorize this transition immediately."

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the older board members.

"I move to approve the emergency transfer," a sycophantic board member named Arthur Vance chimed in, raising his hand.

"Seconded," another voice echoed.

Julian smiled, a triumphant, predatory gleam in his eyes. "All in favor—"

Clang.

The heavy double doors at the back of the boardroom suddenly swung open with a resounding crash.

Every head snapped around.

Standing in the doorway was Martha Kovak, wearing her crisp maid’s uniform, pushing a heavy stainless-steel hospital cart loaded with medical equipment and a large silver thermos.

Behind her, flanked by two armed Rourke estate security guards who looked deeply uncomfortable, sat Maxwell Rourke in his wheelchair.

Julian’s fountain pen slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the mahogany table. Color completely drained from his face as he stared at his cousin.

"Max," Julian stammered, forcing a sickly, nervous smile. "What... what are you doing here? You shouldn't be out of your private suite. The doctor said—"

"The doctor lied, Julian," Maxwell’s voice boomed across the boardroom, rich, deep, and carrying the terrifying, absolute authority of a man who owned every brick in the building.

Maxwell slowly reached down to the armrest of his wheelchair, unbuckled the leather safety strap across his lap, and placed both hands firmly on the padded grips.

The entire boardroom held its collective breath.

With a slow, deliberate exertion of sheer muscle and willpower, Maxwell Rourke pushed himself up out of the wheelchair.

He stood on his own two feet.

For a horrifying three seconds, the tall, imposing titan of the South Side stood towering over the conference table, his gaze locked directly onto a trembling Julian.

Murmurs erupted into absolute chaos. Several board members pushed their chairs back in sheer terror, half-convinced they were looking at a ghost.

"You... you can't walk," Julian whispered, backing away from the head of the table like a cornered rat, his eyes wide with primal panic. "The toxicology reports... the spinal scans... you were supposed to be paralyzed forever!"

"Because you paid off Dr. Sterling to keep me poisoned with a slow-acting synthetic neurotoxin disguised as my daily morning protein shake," Maxwell said coldly, his voice echoing off the glass walls.

Maxwell took two steady, deliberate steps forward, closing the distance between himself and his cousin. He didn't look weak. He looked like a predator who had finally cornered his prey.

Julian’s face twisted in desperate rage. He lunged backward toward his briefcase, his hand diving inside to pull out a heavy, snub-nosed revolver. "You arrogant bastard! If I can't take the company, I'll finish what I started on the highway!"

Before Julian could even clear the holster, the two armed security guards behind Maxwell moved with lightning speed, tackling Julian to the mahogany floor and pinning his arms behind his back with bone-crunching force. The heavy revolver clattered across the floor, sliding away into the corner.

Julian screamed into the carpet as the cold steel handcuffs clicked sharply around his wrists.

Maxwell stood tall over his disgraced cousin, breathing heavily, the color fully returned to his face. He turned his gaze slowly toward the stunned, paralyzed board of directors, who were staring at him in absolute awe and terror.

"The meeting is adjourned," Maxwell said quietly. "And as for the rest of you who took bribes from Julian... clean out your desks by noon, or you'll be joining him in a federal holding cell."
