Chapter 5 - The Anniversary Vase

Later that evening, as the sun dipped below the Chicago skyline, casting long, bruised streaks of orange and purple across the clouds, Clara and Lily stood together in the center of the sprawling penthouse living room.

The room was bathed in the warm, soft glow of floor lamps. Resting on the polished marble coffee table was a crystal vase filled with the fresh, vibrant red roses Clara had bought at the airport the day before. The bruised stems had been neatly trimmed, and the blooms stood tall, elegant, and proud.

Lily gently placed her small hand against the side of the glass vase, smiling up at her mother.

""Daddy would have loved these flowers, Mommy,"" Lily said softly, her voice sweet and innocent.

Clara knelt down, wrapping her arms tightly around her daughter, burying her face in Lily's soft hair as a single, quiet tear slipped down her cheek. But this time, the tear wasn't born of defeat or loneliness. It was a tear of profound release.

Yesterday, she had felt like a ghost haunting the edges of her own life, crushed by grief and humiliated by strangers who only saw the surface. But tonight, she realized something powerful. Grief doesn't diminish you; it strips away the trivial noise and leaves only what is real. She had built her empire to protect her family, but she had also built it to stand as a house of refuge—a place where people were treated with respect, no matter what they wore or how tired they looked.

A soft knock echoed at the suite door.

Clara stood up, walking over to answer it. Standing in the doorway was Lupita, wearing her brand-new, sharp charcoal business suit instead of her usual maroon housekeeping vest, holding a small gift box tied with a silver ribbon.

Lupita looked slightly nervous, her hands fidgeting with the ribbon. ""Ms. Vance... I hope I'm not intruding. I know it's a private evening for you and Lily.""

Clara smiled warmly, pulling the door open wide. ""You're never an intrusion, Lupita. Come on in. What do you have there?""

Lupita stepped inside, handing the small box to Clara. ""It’s just... well, since I started my new role today, I wanted to give you this. It's a small tradition from my hometown in Mexico—a glass hummingbird. They say that hummingbirds only visit homes where there is deep love and resilience, reminding us that even the smallest wings can travel great distances through the heaviest storms.""

Clara carefully untied the silver ribbon and opened the box. Resting inside on a bed of white silk was a delicate, hand-blown glass hummingbird that caught the warm light of the living room lamps, shimmering with brilliant shades of emerald, sapphire, and gold.

Clara looked up, her eyes shining with emotion. She reached out and pulled Lupita into a warm, genuine embrace.

""Thank you, Lupita,"" Clara whispered, her voice thick with gratitude. ""It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.""

Across the room, little Lily bounded over, her eyes wide with delight as she gazed at the sparkling glass bird. Can we put it right next to Daddy's roses, Mom?""

Clara looked down at her daughter, then over at the vibrant red roses standing tall in their crystal vase, and finally out the massive glass window toward the glittering lights of Chicago stretching out endlessly into the night.

""Yes, sweetie,"" Clara said, a radiant, unbreakable smile finally gracing her face. ""Let's put it right beside the roses. It belongs right here.""
