Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By dawn, the Ashford estate resembled a military fortress preparing for a full-scale siege. Heavy iron gates were locked tight, armored perimeter patrols were doubled, and inside the sprawling limestone mansion, the elite captains of our syndicate were gathered around the massive mahogany war table in the underground strategy room.

I stood at the head of the table, the micro-SD card glowing softly inside the holographic projector, casting a sprawling, complex web of offshore corporate accounts, dummy front companies, and clandestine shipping manifests across the wall.

"This isn't just a local drug or extortion racket," Marco explained to the room, tapping the screen to highlight a series of unauthorized bio-lab transactions routed through the harbor. "Caldwell has been using his legitimate import-export licenses as cover to smuggle unapproved pharmaceutical precursors and experimental chemical agents into the country, using shell companies tied directly to federal politicians."

Murmurs of shock and anger rippled through the syndicate captains. In our world, trafficking drugs, running guns, and managing numbers were standard business. But dabbling in unauthorized biological contraband on American soil invited federal scrutiny that could destroy every single family in Chicago.

"And Elena Vance?" asked Victor, our veteran logistics chief, crossing his thick arms over his chest. "Where does she fit into all of this? Word on the street is Caldwell's men are tearing through the south side like wild dogs looking for a specific accountant who vanished from his financial firm three days ago."

"She’s the senior forensic auditor who uncovered the entire scheme," I answered calmly, leaning against the back of my chair. "She copied the master ledger onto that micro-SD card before they caught her. Caldwell chained her up to break her spirit and force her to give up the encryption passwords. She didn't break."

"And now Caldwell knows she's gone," Marco added grimly. "Which means he knows we have the files."

Right on cue, the heavy steel security doors of the underground bunker buzzed loudly. The internal comms system crackled to life, and the voice of our lead gate guard echoed through the room.

"Boss! We have an unannounced delivery at the front gates. A black armored van bearing the crest of the Caldwell shipping corporation. They aren't answering our hails."

I didn't blink. "Let them park at the outer courtyard. Do not lower the internal blast shields. Let's see what message Vincent wants to hand-deliver."

Two minutes later, live security feeds flashed onto the main monitor. The heavy steel gates of the estate had swung open just enough to let a single matte-black tactical van through. The vehicle ground to a halt in the center of our cobblestone courtyard.

The rear doors swung open slowly.

Two armed enforcers stepped out, wearing heavy tactical vests and holding suppressed submachine guns. Between them, they dragged a man who was beaten to a pulp—Terrence Cole, the very man I had originally gone to find at the warehouse the night before.

Cole’s face was bruised beyond recognition, his hands tied tightly behind his back with plastic zip-ties. One of the enforcers stepped forward, reached into his jacket, pulled out a heavy smartphone, and propped it up on the hood of the van facing our front security cameras.

The phone screen lit up, flashing a live FaceTime call.

I reached forward and tapped the master console, piping the incoming call directly onto the massive overhead wall screen.

The face of Vincent Caldwell filled the room.

Caldwell was a sleek, impeccably groomed predator in his late forties, wearing a tailored Italian suit that contrasted sharply with the brutal violence he commanded. He was sitting behind a mahogany desk in his penthouse office, swirling a glass of amber scotch, a thin, cruel smile playing on his lips.

"Dominic," Caldwell’s smooth, oily voice echoed through our strategy room. "I trust you had a pleasant evening touring my old warehouse on the west side."

I kept my expression completely neutral, staring down my rival through the digital lens. "It was drafty, Vincent. You really should invest in better insulation if you're going to keep guests locked up in there."

Caldwell’s smile didn't reach his eyes. "Cut the games, Ashford. You and I both know you stumbled into something that is entirely above your pay grade last night. You’re holding a stray cat that doesn't belong to you. A stray cat carrying my private property."

"If you're talking about the micro-SD card containing your little bio-tech smuggling ring," I replied smoothly, "it's already being decrypted by federal contacts as we speak."

Caldwell’s expression hardened instantly, the casual arrogance vanishing, replaced by a flash of genuine panic. "You’re bluffing, Dominic. If you go to the feds, your own family goes down in the fallout for harboring contraband transit routes. Hand over Elena Vance and the drive, and I’ll let you walk away from this cleanly."

I leaned forward, planting both palms flat on the mahogany war table, letting the cold fury in my eyes translate clearly across the high-definition screen.

"Vincent, let me make something crystal clear to you," I whispered, every word dripping with lethal promise. "You crossed a line when you laid a hand on an innocent woman in my city. You want her back? You want your ledger? Come and take them yourself. But I promise you—when you walk through my gates, you won't be leaving in an armored van. You'll be leaving in a body bag."

Caldwell’s jaw clenched so hard I thought his teeth would shatter. "You arrogant little bastard. Enjoy your last sunrise, Dominic. I’m bringing war to your front door."

The screen flickered black as Caldwell slammed the call down.

On the courtyard monitor, the two enforcers hastily shoved a screaming Terrence Cole back into the van, slammed the doors, and tore rubber out of our gates, spraying gravel everywhere.

I straightened up, looking around the room at my captains, whose eyes were locked on me with absolute, unyielding loyalty.

"Victor, lock down the inner perimeter," I commanded crisply. "Marco, arm the heavy detail. If Caldwell wants a war, we'll give him an absolute massacre."
