Chapter 4 - The Domino Effect

The destruction of Daniel and Sophie’s fragile little fantasy didn’t take months; it unraveled in less than forty-eight hours.

The morning after I served Daniel with the divorce papers, the corporate compliance report that Sophie had desperately tried to patch together without my help landed on the managing partner’s desk. It was an unmitigated disaster—missed regulatory disclosures that exposed our firm to potential federal penalties.

By 2:00 p.m., Sophie was summoned to the executive suite. Twenty minutes later, she walked out of the building carrying a cardboard box containing her personal belongings, her mascara running down her cheeks in jagged, black streaks.

She tried to corner me in the elevator lobby as I was returning from a court filing.

“This is your fault!” Sophie shrieked, her voice echoing off the marble walls as a few junior associates awkwardly looked away. “You set me up! You knew I couldn't finish that report without your edits!”

I turned slowly, holding my leather portfolio against my chest, looking at her with the detached curiosity one might reserve for a laboratory specimen.

“Sophie, I didn’t set you up,” I said evenly. “I simply stopped carrying your dead weight. For three years, I protected you from your own incompetence. I edited your briefs, I covered your deadlines, and I let you believe you were a competent attorney. The moment I stopped doing your job for you, reality caught up.”

“Daniel left me!” she sobbed, her voice cracking in pure desperation. “The moment his accounts were frozen by your lawyers, he panicked! He told me he couldn't afford a hotel, he couldn't support us, and that he was going back to try and beg you for a settlement! He used me, Emily!”

A cold, beautiful wave of vindication washed over me. I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel jealousy. I only felt the profound, crystal-clear satisfaction of cause and effect.

“Of course he used you,” I replied quietly. “Just like you used me. The two of you deserve every single consequence coming your way. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a partnership meeting to attend.”

I stepped past her into the elevator, pressing the button for the executive floor. As the heavy steel doors slid shut, the last thing I saw was Sophie standing alone in the empty lobby, clutching her cardboard box, realizing that the glamorous affair she had risked everything for was nothing more than a sinking ship piloted by two cowards.
