Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Monsters

Back at the county precinct, the harsh fluorescent lighting of the interrogation room cast a sterile glow over the cold metal table. I sat behind the two-way mirror in the adjacent observation room, watching Julian and Victoria as they were brought in for questioning.

Julian looked defeated. His expensive designer suit was wrinkled and stained with mud, his hair messy, his eyes hollow. Victoria, on the other hand, was still vibrating with venomous fury, glaring furiously at the security camera as if she could shatter the glass with her sheer hatred.

Detective Alvarez—a sharp, no-nonsense investigator with piercing dark eyes—sat across from them, dropping a thick manila folder onto the table with a heavy thud.

"Let's dispense with the pleasantries," Detective Alvarez said, his deep voice cutting cleanly through the silence. "You're looking at kidnapping, child endangerment, conspiracy to commit murder, and insurance fraud. The medical examiner has already confirmed that the child was administered a heavy dose of a pediatric sedative—enough to slow her heart rate to near-fatal levels—designed to mimic death long enough to secure a death certificate through a compromised private physician."

Victoria scoffed, tossing her head back. "You have no proof of any of that! The girl had a sudden respiratory failure. We are grieving parents! This is a tragic misunderstanding orchestrated by a delusional, interfering mother-in-law!"

"Grieving parents don't lock their living child inside a sealed casket with a mechanical latch designed to prevent escape from the inside," Julian muttered suddenly, his voice cracking. He didn't look up at Victoria. He stared down at his cuffed hands, his shoulders slumping further with every passing second.

Victoria whipped her head around, her eyes flashing with pure venom. "Shut your mouth, Julian! Don't you dare—"

"No, Victoria, I'm done," Julian interrupted, his voice rising in bitter anguish. "I told you this was insane from the very beginning. I told you we could declare bankruptcy! I told you we didn't have to do this!"

"You coward!" Victoria shrieked, slamming her cuffed hands against the metal table. "You wanted the insurance payout just as much as I did! You signed the papers!"

Detective Alvarez leaned back, a grim, satisfied smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. He didn't need to ask another question. The recorded confession played out in real-time right before our eyes, captured on video and audio for every prosecutor, judge, and jury in the state of Illinois to see.

Sitting behind the mirror, I felt a hot tear roll down my cheek. It wasn't out of sorrow for my son—that boy was gone, replaced by a stranger consumed by greed. It was out of sheer gratitude. My baby girl, my sweet little Chloe, was safe.

Officer Miller gently placed a warm hand on my shoulder. "Your statement and quick thinking saved that little girl's life, Mrs. Vance. CPS is already involved, and child protection services have secured emergency custody. The doctors at the pediatric center say she's stable, her fever is breaking, and she's asking for her grandma."

I stood up immediately, a powerful surge of renewed strength flooding my veins. "Take me to her."
