Chapter 5 - The Empire We Built

The sun rose over Lake Forest the next morning, casting a warm, golden light across the vast, manicured lawns of the Romano estate. The air was crisp and quiet, entirely purged of the blood and shadows that had haunted us just forty-eight hours prior.
Inside the expansive master study, the heavy oak doors were propped open to let in the fresh spring breeze. The files on Tyler Bennett and Victor Crane had been shredded and fed into the incinerator down in the security bunker. The syndicate elders who had attempted to leverage my past against Damian had already received a very quiet, very permanent message from Damian’s legal and tactical teams: try it again, and there wouldn't be enough left of their organizations to bury.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling bay windows, wearing a soft cashmere sweater instead of the black-and-white maid’s uniform I had discarded forever. My reflection in the glass showed a woman who was no longer running, no longer hiding, and no longer afraid.
Footsteps echoed softly across the hardwood floor. Strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me flush against a warm, solid chest. Damian rested his chin gently on my shoulder, his breath warm against my neck.
“You’re uncharacteristically quiet this morning, Mrs. Romano,” Damian murmured, a low, rich chuckle vibrating against my back.
I smiled, leaning back into his embrace and resting my hands over his arms. “I was just thinking about the first time I met you.”
“You mean when you dumped a tray of expensive wine all over my designer suit?” Damian teased softly.
“I mean when you let me believe I was just an ordinary maid, while quietly making sure the entire underworld knew that touching a single hair on my head meant a death sentence,” I corrected, turning around in his arms to face him.
Damian’s dark eyes softened, the terrifying mafia kingpin melting away to reveal the man who had quietly protected me through every storm. He reached up, his calloused thumb gently tracing the line of my jaw—right where I had slapped him just days ago.
“You earned that slap, you know,” Damian murmured, a playful smirk touching his lips.
“And you deserved it,” I replied, stepping up onto my tiptoes and pressing a soft, deliberate kiss directly against his bruised jaw.
Damian’s arms tightened around me, lifting me slightly off the floor as his lips met mine in a deep, possessive, and utterly unconditional kiss that promised forever.

The twenty-two powerful guests who had watched me slap the most feared man in Chicago had thought I was signing my own death warrant. But as I stood in the arms of the man who owned the city—not as a servant, but as his equal, his partner, and his queen—I realized that slap wasn't an act of humiliation.
It was the moment our empire began.
