Chapter 4 - The Lion's Den

By the end of the first week, the house of cards my father and Damian Vale had spent decades building had completely collapsed into dust.

Franklin Ashford had been formally arrested at his country club, charged with multiple counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement. Facing up to thirty years in federal prison, he quickly realized that none of his high-society friends were answering his calls, and none of his expensive lawyers could perform miracles against the mountain of digital evidence I had provided.

Damian Vale, however, was not the type of man to go down quietly in a prison cell.

With his financial empire frozen, his street enforcers scattered, and his pride utterly destroyed by a runaway bride, Damian had become a desperate, cornered animal. And cornered animals lash out with maximum violence.

It happened on a rainy Thursday evening exactly two weeks after my escape.

Luca and I were reviewing the final asset-recovery documents for my mother’s foundation in his private study on the penthouse’s secure upper level. Suddenly, the building’s primary security alarms began to shriek, flashing an aggressive crimson light across the dark walls.

The intercom crackled to life. Boss, we’ve got a breach, Luca’s head of security barked over the speaker. It’s Damian Vale and a dozen armed mercenaries. They bypassed the ground-floor perimeter using inside contacts. They’re heading up the private elevator shaft right now.

Before Luca could even reach for the heavy tactical pistol resting on his desk, I calmly stood up, walked over to the secure wall-mounted terminal, and tapped a sequence of keys.

“Don't send the enforcers to the lobby,” I instructed Luca, my voice completely level.

Luca raised an eyebrow, his hand resting on his holster. “Claire, what are you doing? They have automatic weapons.”

“They think they’re storming a castle to rescue their boss's honor,” I replied, a sharp, cold smile touching my lips. “They don't realize I’ve spent the last week quietly rewriting the security protocols for every single commercial building Damian ever financed—including this one, which he helped design three years ago.”

With a swift keystroke, I activated the smart-building lockdown override.

Down in the private elevator shaft, the car carrying Damian and his strike team suddenly jerked to a violent halt halfway between the thirty-second and thirty-third floors. Automated heavy steel blast doors slammed shut above and below them, trapping them in total darkness. Simultaneously, the smart-ventilation system flooded the shaft with high-density non-lethal knockout gas.

Within ninety seconds, the internal security monitors showed all twelve armed mercenaries—and Damian Vale himself—collapsing unconscious onto the metal floor of the stalled elevator car.

Luca stared at the monitors in absolute astonishment, then slowly turned his gaze back to me, shaking his head with a mixture of disbelief and profound awe.

“Remind me never to get on your bad side, Claire,” Luca said softly, his voice rich with dark amusement.

“Just treat me right,” I replied smoothly, walking back to my chair and sitting down as if nothing had happened. “And you’ll never have to worry about finding out what’s on the other side of my security walls.”

Ten minutes later, Luca’s tactical team escorted a handcuffed, furious, and groggy Damian Vale out of the building and straight into the custody of federal marshals who were waiting quietly in the underground garage. Damian glared up at the penthouse windows as they shoved him into the back of an armored transport van, his eyes wide with a mixture of sheer hatred and total humiliation.

He had tried to buy me for seventeen million dollars, thinking I was a helpless pawn in his grand criminal game. Instead, I had used his own arrogant greed to tear his entire empire down to the bare foundations.
